Unexpected credit card charge by ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK?

RoyF

My latest credit card statement had a charge of $69.95 going to ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK. I had no idea what it could be, and contacted my Visa card customer service. I had the charge removed.

Curious, I looked at previous years' statements and found the same $69.95 charge on the same date last year; I didn't notice that one at the time.

I'm still not sure, but I wonder this is connected to something that I unwittingly did while making an online reservaton through Reserve America.

Has anyone else seen an ACT*ACTIVE-NETWORK charge on their credit card statement, and do you have any idea what it was for?

Not only is it 2 day shipping, but it is free shipping. Along with the streaming video and a good rewards Visa Card from Amazon. Oh and also the $70.00 credit they gave me to sign up. I'm quite pleased so far.
Just saying...Brian

I will skip the 2 day shipping for rewards on other merchandise. Can't always do that, but I do try to limit it. It's darned expensive for you to ship UPS yourself, let alone 2-day. Amazon must have cut a pretty good deal.

Thanks, everyone, for the feedback. Look back over my Visa card statements, I am pretty sure that I unwittingly signed up for the ACTIVE-NETWORK membership when I reserved at a Georgia state park in October last year. There is an Atlanta software provider called ACTIVE WORKS OUT that provided the software.

I had said that it might have been Reserve America, but I wish to retract that. I have never had any problem with reservations through Reserve America.

Reserve America is run by Active-Network, as is the federal Recreation.Gov websites. And several state parks systems which do not use the Reserve America interface.

Active-Network is also very big in convention facility bookings, health clubs, concert events, practically any entertainment venue or sport.

Many people like the federal government and most state park systems do not allow the "Opt Out" click box. But many do.

Smells like fish and Amazon Prime. Do I need to pay a hundred bucks a year for 2 day shipping... Don't think so.

The free shipping is just a perk. I have Amazon Prime, and what I really want are the video downloads. Amazon has a lot of of movies, etc., that I can't get from Netflix or from the television networks. I look at it as an acceptable charge for entertainment.

you signed up for a 'free trial' somewhere that was promoted by 'Active Network'. When your free trial was over they billed you because you didn't click a box somewhere or contact them that you did not want their annual membership.

Here is a line directly from their website:
What happens after the trial period?
If at the end of your trial you wish to keep your membership, no further action is needed.
Once the trial period ends, your annual membership is in place, which costs

$69.95 annually

Amazon started something similar signing people up for Amazon Prime which shows up as a continuing monthly charge.

Hate spam (e-mail and phone calls) and this idea that everyone is automatically signed up for and opts-in on services and such, forcing the consumer to read the fine print and opt-out.
