Update from Angel Fire New Mexico...

Left the Class C at home and headed out on my motorcycle {Indian Springfield} last Tuesday to visit my friends in Angel Fire. We get up here several times a year and late September early October is by far the most spectacular time to come. Hard to imagine a more beautiful place on earth than the southern rockies in early fall.

The new Angel Fire RV Resort has a pretty good size crowd but highway 64 up over the pass from Taos is a serious adventure/challenge for the larger rigs. Frankly I don't know how or why some folks do it. :h

The aspens are turning gold as the colder nights arrive with clear sunny days in the 60 -70's. The Elk are on the move, we've had a dozen or more on the property everyday and you can hear them bugling constantly. The wild turkey flocks are on the move along with the deer.

Shotgun Willies in Red River still serves the finest breakfast burrito on earth... stuffed with smoked brisket and smothered in Hatch green chiles sauce.

The ride up was an adventure as I did it in one day... 708 miles. Left Tucson at 0615 and rolled in at 0630 {local time}. It was 97 degrees out on I-40 west of Albuquerque but quickly cooled as the afternoon thunderstorms rolled in. When I finally reached Angel Fire the temp was down to 42 degrees and the rain was turning to hail, small but enough to sting as it began to get seriously dark.

Tomorrow I'll ride home stopping for the night in Deming... a more civilized ride to be sure, mostly boring down I-25 vs the mountain route I took coming up - Tucson to Show Low, east to Quemado and north through the Malpais Refuge to I-40. Deming to home is only 4 hours and I'll get an hour back when crossing into Arizona.

Angel Fire/Taos is an amazing area to explore but be advised they are calling for snow next Friday.

Have not had much luck posting pictures since the Photobucket fiasco a couple of years ago but thought I would try again... here is a shot of my friend's house sitting on 3 acres at 9,000'

Well what do you know, it worked. Here is a shot of mama Elk serving up dinner to her rather large calf. We had a couple of dozen Elk wandering through the property every day, they even see the occasional black bear and the wild turkeys and deer are always around as well:

When Paul built the house I jokingly suggested he put in an RV site {complete with 30 amp service and water, fire ring etc}. This shot was taken in July of 2017 and as you can see that is exactly what he did. We get up there about 3 times a year. He had to trench 150" to bring in the power {you can see the pedestal in the mama Elk shot}. That is my old Kendon folding motorcycle trailer next to our coach {just replaced it with a nice 6 X 10 - 14' overall cargo trailer}:

700+ miles on the bike is a long day ! BTW, I was in Portland ME for the start of this years cannonball.... imagine going cross country on a 100 year old bike. It's on my list to do in the future.
We drove rt. 64 in our 43' motorhome towing a pickup 2 years ago. 65' long. I had no issues with the road.

Drove 64 from Taos thru Angel Fire to Raton a month ago driving a F-350 6.7L (SRW) pulling a 40 ft Big Country. No problems at all pulling it. Great route. I commented several times wish we were on the motorcycle. One of the best motorcycle roads we've seen. Would really be pretty now that leaves are changing.
Thanks for the write up.

That's a great area. Love it. We've driven that highway many times with our 40' motorhome. No issues. It's just slow-going.

My son lives in Taos and we always love it there when we visit, we did that drive from Angle Fire to Taos pulling the camper, I say we could check our own brakes lights on that section. I even head out there for ski season and usually stay with him for a couple of months. As we say Pray for Snow!!!!!!

Yep, this is a very beautiful area this time of year. Will be riding the Enchanted Circle on Sunday with a group of riders round trip from Albuquerque. Looking forward to the high road to Taos along the way. Some of the best motorcycle roads in the country.
