We crossed the Canadian border Wed. 24 May

We topped fuel in Oroville Wa and crossed with full tanks. As we pulled into the gate at Osoyoos crossing we see a new sign, "do not set air brake parking brake" when we get into the gate the guard tells us to hold the foot brake and shut the engine down, then we hand him the 2 passports, and start the 20 questions like always.
Then he says I'll open that gate over there and you go park in that lot and come inside.

We parked and went inside, and a nice young man came to the counter and asked what he could do for us, We told him we were directed to park and come inside, then we showed him the Shot gun import registration request, he then went over to the window for the gate guard, spook for a second, came back and asked us a few more questions about what was inside the coach, like a dangerous dogs, we told him no, so then he asks for the keys to both vehicles and tells us to have a seat while he inspects the coach. he took about 10 minutes to look at the coach, then turns, to talk us.
He was most concerned with the amount of alcohol we had aboard than any thing else, he explained the rules about alcohol, then talked firearms safety, then he registered the weapon, we paid the fee. and we were on our way.
Things learned, has a trigger lock on your weapon, and store the ammo in a different place, and have your weapon in a locked compartment.

WE come to you tonight from Smithers BC , about to turn north on the Cassiar in the morning.

With that attitude, I hope that our military follows that concept when/if you "ever" need help!!!! Oh but the way..... You Canadians are many millions of dollars in arrears on your NATO dues!!!

Seriously? You need to pull your head out of the sand. I find that insulting as my grandfather fought in the front line trenches in Europe in WWI, was gassed and almost didn't survive. My dad served in the navy and my mom in the army in WW2. My uncle was a captain on the supply ships to the UK and watched as U-boats sank some of them and he was under order to keep going even with sailors flailing and screaming in the water for help. They served in order to protect our way of life here in North America and to help other countries. Other Canadians on this forum likely have similar family stories. BTW, Canada also entered WWII 2 years ahead of the US. We are always there in full force when really needed. I could go on but better bite my tongue...

This is really getting off track but am not going to leave a comment like that alone.

If we're going the political route it's not hard to see who voted for who.

Their loss. Canada is a beautiful country full of friendly people. Would they have been equally upset if they were "targeted" by US Customs upon their return? I have been questioned and inspected just as thoroughly by the guys on the US side as by Canadian customs.

I don't disagree, but we all make choices. Once they were informed they were targeted because where they lived, they choose to not spend their money and time across the border.

I'm certain that the US border patrol would have not been offended by their Texas license plates.... Do you?

In this new world we live in I am happy for border checks. Never had a fear crossing but did lose some groceries coming back.

EVERYONE is subject to inspections going BOTH ways over the border. As long as you are honest and have nothing to hide there is nothing to worry about. After seeing some of the issues these agencies deal with I have a much greater respect for the job they do.

Differences are a reason to travel, not just locations but cultures as well. What's the point if everywhere you go is just like home?

Along with CA, NY, and IL, Canada and Mexico are places we will never visit again. Too many rules that don't agree with our life style.

I just wonder what these rules are that you disagree with. I've been to all of the places you have been and have never been issued a set of different rules that hindered our stay. :R

I live part-time in CA and have for almost 30 yrs. CA is a beautiful State with so much to offer in such a short distance (mountains, desert, ocean, Giant Sequoia's).

I was just in IL recently and the only thing I don't like are the toll roads. Otherwise, I could have been any State.

I have found in our travels that people all want the same thing, good health, a safe community and prosperity.

Safe travels,

I have a part-time residence in southern California that is a big snowbird destination for Canadians and anyone living in the US snow country. We apparently get the 'nice ones' as we have befriended several Canadians that visit our area.

So, I'm not quite understanding. Were you crossing the border with a weapon Not locked away with the ammo separately locked away? Or are you just reminding everyone?

Probably wasn't locked down and unloaded. Who carries a gun like that?
If you've got the gun locked down and the ammo locked up separately, what's the use?
Then it's like having an expensive stick and box of odd shaped rocks!

According to US Federal law, you can transport firearms through states that normally restrict firearms. You have to lock the guns separately from the locked up ammo, and the guns have to be out of reach of passengers (if possible). I travel through Massachusetts all the time to go hunting in Vermont, and Mass state troopers are known to be rather strict with state firearm laws. As long as you transport them legally, you are okay. I actually carry a copy of the Massachusetts carry laws with me, you can find them on the internet from the Massachusetts state gov website - as far as I know today with all states you can find the applicable laws on the internet. I am using Mass just as an example because I know it, but the federal law goes for other states, sometimes with minor variations.

Grit dog, you really, really need to research carry laws if you are going to have a firearm with you if and when you leave your state. You can transport firearms, even into Canada, just do it according to the applicable laws and you will be fine.
