I have tried two types of gps, Garmin and Magellan. Both will failings. Am looking for best option. Google is good but I have to use data so I'd like one that doesn't require data. Any thoughts?

I now have a Garmin RV 660 unit. Earlier in 2018, I had a Garmin Nuvi 855.

I use Garmins, I'm an HVAC service tech and use them day in and day out. Some of the young techie guys use their phones, I just know one time one of them met me on a job, and I was at the correct house and he was down the street on the wrong side of the street trying to figure out where I was. I also figured out you can replace the internal battery in a Garmin.

Did you know that Google Maps will let you easily download maps to your phone/tablet so you don't need data? Even though some people will tell you it won't work, almost every phone sold for the last several years has a dedicated gps chip built in so you can even use an old phone with no data plan. That is what I do on my motorcycle. I just loaded the maps using wifi and had a successful trip from South Dakota to the California coast and back home. I meant to take my gps and just had the old phone for an mp3 player in case of rain, and I forgot the gps.

Thanks for all the posts. But in regards to Second Chances post (Have you used the search function on the forum? This has been discussed dozens - if not hundreds - of times) Rob if you type in what I posted, disregarding what replays we had today, you will find tons of post, nothing to do with what I asked. Has anyone else used the Rand Mcneil?

Waze for ALL trips, Older Garmin with traffic for additional travel. I have Inrix app on my phone... it sometimes gets opened when there's a conflict between the other two.

I have several Garmins and one Rand McNally.
We use a Garmin for day tripping when route is not too envolved. We use the Rand McNally in MH and more complex trips.
Garmins seem to have to reroute too often. Rand McNally just does it.

I use a Garmin 770 and it works well most of the time. I bought it as an upgrade to get the WiFi update ability. It replaced a Garmin 760 which I bought after Apple Maps sent me down a road that had a underpass that was too low for my MH. I have used various brands of GPS units, and several iterations of phone based mapping solutions and they all have their failings and will from time to time cause you to slap your forehead and yell at the beoch in the box. I wonโ€™t use any Google based product or applications for various reasons, but primarily they could not fine my home. Many people have used it to try to find my place (on a major road) only to be sent down the wrong way.

I use a Magellan RoadMate. It works decently well for me, even though it's not an RV-specific model. While it may not always produce exactly optimal routing, it at least generally comes up with something that isn't totally crazy and sure beats guesswork with an atlas inset when in a city or town I'm not familiar with. I'm also not afraid to mute it when we disagree about how to navigate for some reason.

Any GPS system, whether standalone or a phone app, is going to be, at best, a good servant but a horrible master; it's akin to fire in that regard. The GPS is no replacement for using your common sense and powers of observation.

Lets not get this argument going again.
A phone is not a GPS.
It shares some features but falls way short, assuming of course that one knows how to work a real GPS

I have 3 or 4 Garmins, car, truck, motorcycle. They all work as well as the maps that are supplied. I'm very happy with them.

But I only use them to guide me on a preset route. I don't use them to determine my route from point A to point B. I set it and they follow it.
