New Orleans for a day

We are going to be going through New Orleans in 10 days and will have a full day there before continuing on to the Destin area of Florida. Looking to hear of some "must sees" or "must do's" for our quick trip through the city. Staying at Ponchartrain Landing RV park and they offer transportation to the city so we are thinking we may take that option if it works with our brief tour. Family of four with two boys aged 15 and 11 so be great to find something to spark their interest. Let me know what's out there. Thanks.

In for suggestions. Headed there somepoint in the next few days for work. I will be there for a VERY long while though.

Goose - I lived in NOLA for 4 years, and have visited often since then. Where will you be staying and working? What kinds of things do you like to do? The New Orleans area has a lot of interesting things to see and do .....

Going to building the New VA Hosptial Downtown. As far as where I am staying, couldn't tell ya at this point. Been looking for a camper and campsite. But as of right now, we are not 100% on when we are leaving. I love backpacking, working on diesels, racing, camping, and the like. What I don't like, the heat, the city, lots of people, drunks. I am sure I am going to love NO. HAHA

At 15 and 11, those guys have probably seen worse on MTV! Bourbon Street is only one small part of the French Quarter - everybody should see the street performers around Jackson Square, the riverfront, and all the other sights - not bad food around there either. Check out Johnny's Por Boys or Mother's for an economical belly full of local fare.

On the way out of town, take Route 90 rather than I-10. It will take you out past the levees and run you up the coast through Biloxi - a little longer than I-10, but much more scenic. The water really doesn't get nice and blue until you hit Florida, but it is a nice ride.

I agree that you would be remiss to go to New Orleans and not see the French Quarter and walk down Bourbon Street. That being said, I don't agree with the comment that it is fine for kids. We will be there this year for a day and I do plan to take my kids to see it however at a minimum you will walk by several strip clubs on Bourbon Street that will very obviously be strip clubs and it is highly likely that there will be women in the windows in full view of Bourbon Street tempting patrons to come inside. I have also been on Bourbon Street at 4 p.m. in the afternoon where at those same strip joints the strippers are standing on the sidewalk outside the strip club with very little clothing on again attracting patrons into the strip joints. You can decide whether that is a good teaching moment for you and your children or not but be prepared that it is highly likely that that's what you will find.

It is going to be very hot and humid any tour in one of the open double decker red busses will melt you so chose carefully. Avoid the Katrina tours we are over it and you should be too. Swamp tours are ok but it is a swamp which is stagnet water and hot this time of the year.

This park is in the middle of everything.

Since you only have a day, I second Dick's suggestion of taking a tour to get the most of your time. There are other options besides bus tours - walking tours and biking tours might be fun with the kids.

New Orleans IS the French Quarter. I suggest, since
you have such a short time, THAT is what to see.
Walk down Bourbon street, this is O K for kids if you
stay out of the bars, walk about 2 blocks toward the
river to Jackson Square....Cabildo museum,Jax Brewery
(6 floors of shops, etc no brewing anymore), Cafe duMond
for half and half coffee with powered doughnuts,
view of the river..........walk back to Canal Street
or ride the street car,
and take the FREE walk on ferry across the river and back.
You will have seen the best of New Orleans. P M me for more.
