Pet ID tags, What info to put on it?

Hello,

I am buying a new ID tag for my dog. Yes he is microchipped but vet said the chip does move around and can be hard to find. He suggested attaching an ID tag with a telephone number because it gives quick access for petfinder to reunite the lost pet with his owner. Since we travel in areas that don't always receive a signal do you put a family member's phone number on it too. Do you put any other info on your pet's tags? What kind of tag do you prefer? Thanks for your help.

Please include a phone number. We found a lost dog on one of our trips and were able to phone the owner who then came to pick her up. (She had gone swimming and floated down river to where we found her.)

Samantha,

You might like boomerang tags collartags, they have designs for leather, nylon, and adjustable nylon collars.

We have flat nylon collars embroidered with my cell number. Dogs don't wear tags because of danger of snags, etc. I keep them on the key rack by the door. However, we were on the road for some trials over the 4th, so we re-attached everyone's tags...1 for rabies, 1 ID with name, address, and cell phone. Tags are on a spring-loaded clip for easy on-off from the collars.

Here are the tube ones I have:

http://tinyurl.com/idtubepet - it's at Amazon. You get 6 for about $5. Remove the glass vial inside for easier inputting of your paper.

However, I'll be using what one of our member's is using. A metal pill capsule with information written in water proof ink and paper. Probably in stainless steel, or titanium.

Calvin wants a skull tattoo with his name and flames. I said no, but he said that you have a bunch, so why can't I have at least one?

I gave him a GREAT answer, .... BECAUSE I SAID! Plus with all your black fur, it would be a waist of money cause NO ONE WOULD SEE IT!

We use boomerang tags too. We have our last name, address, home & cell numbers. We don't put dog names on the tags and have spares in case we have a dog in for training. We prefer the collartags since there is nothing dangling that can snag.

For their main tag, I used an etched one with my land line number, the dog's name, and REWARD.

When traveling, I use a small tube/barrel style tag. I write down on a small paper, the vehicle license plate number, the name of the campground I'm staying at, the campsite number, and the dates I'm staying at the campground. If I'm doing just overnight stays, I may list several on the same paper. Then I roll the paper up to fit the tube/barrel and seal it with a dab of crazy glue.

The tube/barrel style works well for temporary ID needs and it is easy to change the info as I change locations.

Any of the stainless steel tags made by Boomerang Pet Tags. Some of my pets are wearing tags from Boomerang that are ten years old, and they still look brand new.

Millie has a "Home Again" chip, and we also keep a TAG on her collar that has both her I.D. number and Home Again's 800-phone. That means anyone can contact the retrieval service. And we make sure to keep info (including secondary contact folks) up to date there.

But I also made the below tag on one of those do-it-yourself machines at Walmart. Focus of this tag is the however remote possibility that Millie could somehow "escape" while we're traveling and get scooped up by some well meaning person that takes her home or to a shelter thinking she's locally based.

It's my hope that they'd read this tag, understand her situation, and maybe look around a bit for me/my vehicle; or at least recognize me as the frantically searching rightful owner. Could save everyone a whole lot of trouble, not to mention hours of fretting!

Dogs have township tags, township have our phone info and the vets info.

On regular tag we put a number to contact us, vets number and address.

We don't put the dogs' names on their tags. That way if someone decides they want a geriatric Golden or a three legged Lab, the dogs won't respond to their commands. We do put our last name, cell number and home number on the tags.

We put our address & phone number, other side dog's name, the Home Again 800 #, and also microchip number. The people that have chip should always have your contact info. We couldn't get info all on one side. Our tag is etched & painted. They are more readable. Some tags are cheapo. We got one that is etched deep.

I put my address and the dog's name on the tag also...but here in PA we also have to have our dog licensed..which that number also comes back to my address and phone number. I also have a tag from getmehome.com sponsored by Heartguard and Frontline. They have the dogs name, pic, address and phone number.
