I bought a pack of ordinary Sun Maid raisins as a snack. Miz Plush (13 year old large couch potato tabby) likes them. Does anybody know if they're harmful for her in small amounts (4-5 per day)?

Read recently about the danger for dogs. My dear Reason For Living used to always save one raisin at the bottom of the cereal bowl for the dog. She (the dog) lived to be 14 so I guess one a day didn't kill her. The dog also swiped a lot of Hershey's kisses once and lived to bark another day. For a while we referred to her as Tinsel Turds.

Funny! When I was a kid we had a tuxedo cat named Sparky who loved to slurp up the Xmas tree tinsel like spaghetti. He always made quite festive poops at that time of year. :W

Staying on topic, we've had various pets that found a stray raisin on the floor and did not die, but I wouldn't feed them regularly. Some pets just want whatever their people are having.

Both raisins and grapes are potentially fatal to dogs, and very likely cats as well, They cause kidney failure. I wouldn't give them to my treasured pet.

Thank y'all, folks. She's pretty special to me, so I'll keep them far away.

I wouldn't give them to her. Grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs (resulting in kidney failure), although as far as I know veterinarians have yet to identify what substance in or on them causes the problem. Also, no safe levels have been determined. Some animals seem to be able to tolerate large amounts and others have gotten sick after eating a small amount. Although most of the problems involving grape/raisin toxicity have been with dogs, it's believed that they can trigger the same issues in cats.

I agree with Hondavalk. Raisins and grapes can be toxic to some dogs and cats. Definitely not worth the risk.

I hate to say it but I would call your vet and ask them. Raisins and grapes are bad for both cats and dogs. I believe kidney failure is the concern.
