Rving with large dog

We are new to RVing and were shocked to find so many RV parks do not accept the larger dogs like Doberman. I spent an hour calling parks in one city without success, they say their insurance doesn't allow these dogs. What do others do with the larger breeds? Is there a website that lists the parks that accept them? Thank you for your help.

Thank you all for your comments. It's just going to be a little more time consuming to find a park than I thought. Good thing we love the little knuckle head! I was also told now that the national parks do not allow any dog on the hiking trails, even on a leash. Which creates a problem not wanting to leave your dog in an RV all day. This is all so interesting as I see "companion animals" in grocery stores, restaurants, etc. wonder what the nat. parks do about that?

I heard a Pit owner say that when asked "what breed" he would tell them it was a Staffordshire Terrier".

Maybe you could tell them its a German Black Hair mix, which is true.

We were refused a few times on size. Well trained obedient Standard Poodles.

Sorry that it's making your RVing experiences difficult for you. Dobies, rotties and pitbulls all have bad raps, so many times it's the owner who should be banned.

Have seen Weimaraners on that dreaded 'breed banned' list.

Never have seen Dalmatians. As a previous owner of 2 they could easily be on the list as they are 'not other dog' friendly :E

I have traveled with several large dogs on 'the list'. I would suggest checking the campground's pet policy, or calling ahead. Many state and private parks in my area accommodate us. I would suggest that you make sure your dog is well-trained and socialized. If you can not control your animal at home, do not think you will do better at a campground. No one else wants to hear endless barking, an owner screaming, or wants to worry about a dog being dangerous. This goes for any size pet.

It seems to be the opposite here, or at least BC and AB. We have stayed at two that I can think of at the moment. They had no problem with my dog. Maybe back to the insurance thing?

As for the original question. I have not seen a website that lists what breeds a cg will accept or not accept. I myself have spent much time just surfing cg websites. Most will say weather or not they have restrictions. We frequent a small number of campgrounds and they are all fine with my dog.

Stephanie, if it's all in one city I suspect it's a city ordinance more so than the campgrounds themselves. My suggestion would be to go to the Campgrounds/Attractions forum and post that you are looking for a cg in the area you need but have the dobie. Someone familiar with the area can at least offer campground suggestions-at that point you can call/go to their website and find out if there are restrictions.

I agree that we should keep this thread on topic of helping the OP find a place.

In addition to Crowe's advice above, you might also look at a neighboring town, just outside the city line within the county, and/or just over the county line. If it is a city or county ordinance, you could find the next city/county to be much more relaxed.

Unfortunately, breed restriction is the way it is. There are many campgrounds that do not have restrictions and we have never had a problem finding one. The campground may not be the one we wanted, in exactly the location, but never couldn't find one.

When we got our new home owners policy, one of the questions from the agent was "Do you have a dog?" Then, "What breed?" When I said Golden Retriever, she laughed and said never going to be a problem. While rare, I have encountered Goldens that were as dangerous as any Pit or Rot that were on the aggressive side.

While statistically relevant for insurers (and probably their bottom line), breed restrictions don't really address the issues of dog aggression and the lack of people properly training/understanding dogs.

And that in a nutshell is what is wrong with breed restrictions.
We can't tell just by looking, which 16 year olds are burglars nor can we tell what dog may bite.

This is one thing I ac so against. Consensus my........the people that have this.......forget it I'll just end with this.

Please do not judge my dog by what other dogs have done or will do.

This thread isn't about whether it's right or wrong to ban breeds, but to offer help to the OP to find cg's that will allow her dog. Let's keep it that way.

My suggestion would be to go to the Campgrounds/Attractions forum and post that you are looking for a cg in the area you need but have the dobie. Someone familiar with the area can at least offer campground suggestions-at that point you can call/go to their website and find out if there are restrictions.

Fortunately it isn't as big an issue where I am.

There was a fellow a number of years ago that lived in Calgary Alberta. He had a rottweiler. His insurance company canceled his insurance. There was another that took his insurance at a lesser rate because of his dog.

I guess it's a fact of life, I just don't like it. Unlike a person the dog has no way of speaking in it's defense.

I guess I could take your example one step further. If a 16 yr old breaks into your house are all 16 yr olds bad?
