Our Whirpool residential refrigerator in our 5th Wheel quit making ice. Service guys says it needs a whole new door to fix problem, and it could break again. Looking at possibly replacing with new unit. Everything else works fine. It would need to be a counter depth style unit. What brand of residental refrigerator are you using and how do you like it?

Lantley, that is exactly the problem. Tech said the heater that kerps the line ooen broke off and fell down so the line is freezing. So a new door is over $600 plus installation. I know it's a bit old fashion, but they still make Ice trays. I also cut the top 4" off of 2 liter soft drink bottles, fill the bottom part with water and freeze. You can break it out with a hammer and usually reuse the containers. I used to get more ice than I could use in this manner, even at the beach when we filled a beer cooler every day..

It's really unfortunate the lack of quality these days. It's greed, nothing else. These new fridges have a ONE YEAR WARRANTY. In the past, they would have 5 years+ (talking residential fridges).

The problem may not be with the ice maker itself but with the door. The water lines may freeze within the door causing the ice maker or water in the door feature to fail. This is a known issue on a few models. Google it for yourselves.
You can open door and thaw it out with a hair dryer. PLace towel over freezer area to keep cold from escaping while door is open.Things may work for awhile but the fix is often only temporary.
The tech is not pulling the OP's leg he needs a new door.
I imagine rather than buy just a door it's time to buy a new fridge or do without ice.

The crew that replaced my Norcold with a residential fridge said they had given up on through-the-door type ice makers in RV's. They said they were nothing but trouble.

These guys have more invested in the quality of fridge they install than the manufacturer, because they have back the fridge and have to take it out and back in for a technician to do work. This ends up being free work they don't get paid for. They are, in effect, not only guaranteeing their work but also backing the quality of the fridge manufacturer.

Well my info is 30+ years old when I was driving truck and stopped at a plant in Ohio and the sign out front listed all 4 of those brands being built there.

That is not necessarily true of all Kenmore fridges. In 2004 we bought a town home in Florida with the idea of snowbirding. It came with the GE fridge originally installed new in the 1970s when the place was built. We decided to replace it and went to Sears. Found a top freezer Kenmore model we liked and bought it. When it was delivered, the fridge had the Kenmore badge on it but the box it came in said Samsung.

Kenmore, Whirlpool, Maytag, Frigidaire, they all come off the same assembly line form the same plant the only difference is the badges, and sometime the trim. Other then that they're all the same.

Nice thing about Kenmore is that parts are usually available, locally, through a Sears service center.

Yes, the ice maker is an easy replacement. It has nothing to do with a door other than side-by-side door fridges have a dispenser for ice and water.

Our previous refrigerator was a cheap Kenmore with a ice maker. It did not have a dispenser. After a few years, the ice maker caused the breaker to trip. We put that fridge in the garage with the ice maker unplugged and bought a side by side with an ice maker with a dispenser. The ice maker itself was the same exact part, the tray is just different.

The new fridge has tripped the breaker a few times since we got it about 6 years ago, but not like the old one. In the old one, if the ice maker was attached, the breaker would trip. Unplug the ice maker and the fridge would run fine. A replacement Ice Maker was about $130, but decided to get a new fridge anyway. We already replaced the dishwasher with a Stainless Steel unit so wanted the fridge to match.

We have replaced every appliance this house came with except the Microwave. We had the house built about 10.5 years ago. Every new appliance has been a Whirlpool, except for the fridge, it is a Kenmore made by Frigidaire. We have been happy with all the new appliances. The microwave did have to be fixed under warranty, needed a new control board, but has been fine since. That is a Kenmore too.

X 10 on getting a second opinion, the ice maker is not in the door but in the fridge, only the dispenser and control switch to dump cubers are in the door. So it it's not making cubes, the whole unit is easy to remove and change it out yourself. Plenty of Y Tube videos on how to due this. Could probably even get a new unit on Ebay at a reasonable $$$.

Most Whirlpool refrigerators that have an ice maker, the ice maker can be replaced. I have a Kenmore branded Whirlpool in the S&B that has had two icemakers replaced. This is due to the bad quality of our water and the poor quality of the icemaker.

Yea replacing is kinda drastic. Much cheaper to buy a bag of ice every week. We are stationary at the moment but will be moving around in about a year. We had a Samsung in our S&B house and I like Samsung equipment in general. They have a couple counter depth friges that would work. GE also have some interesting models including one with a kreurig feature built in. But I've read some negative reviews on it. Have never been a fan of GE appliances. Still considering what to do. Wife kinda wants a new frige anyways. I don't want to spend the money when everything else is just fine. Still would like to hear what brands are working well out there.
