Code 46 on onan hdkaj diesel genset

Could there be any other reason for a code 46 besides faulty controller. I have 12.8 volts at the genset terminals. And I've cleaned the ground strap. If not does anyone know of an alternative solution to buying a new $3200 controller?
Perhaps there is a retrofit replacement? Help!!

It's sounding like the company is not so well off financially.. If they cannot afford to stand behind their product, stocks drop, sales drop. It's not like the gensets have been abused. This is normal use, it is a defective product. It's too bad because onan used to be a good generator. But these defective power inverters are going to ruin them. The real sad part is they probably contract out that part!
If I had heard about these things going down after such short use, and the cost to fix them... I would have sourced a motor coach with a different genset. Only a matter of time before word spreads

I wish you good luck with Cummins. But I wouldn't hold my breath. I had a new KY. Break the air filter housing at 51 hours less than a year old. No warranty.

I've sent an email to Cummings, no reply yet. I really hope they can do something for me.
With only 422 hours on it, it must have been defective. Problem is time wise the warranty is up.
But it takes a long time to rack up hours on a recreation unit. Most campsites limit the amount of time you can run a genset. Surely cummins realizes that. Anyhow wish me luck.

When they first came out.Inverters were going out faster than they could build them.

That generator is a PMA, variable speed, variable frequency output. You MUST have the inverter. You should not be losing inverters that fast. Make sure you have tight connections.

Thanks... Tried it.. No change... I did a voltage check at j5 and j8 , 12.8 volts there.. So the inverter has voltage.. Guess it is shot..
Hmmm. Decision time,, new inverter $3,000 cnd. To get me another 400 hrs of use... Naw!
Does anyone know of a hdkaj onan that has been converted to old school controls? I've seen the older control boards for $200. Who needs smart technology. Warning lights are just as good

Sorry--a little clarification--hold the stop button in the STOP position for 30 seconds.Then start and run 15 min.

I had the same problem. If you experienced low batteries and had to charge them or if you changed your batteries you may have the code 46. Before you take it In try the following to attempt to clear the code. Hold the start/stop button for 30 seconds and then run the genset for 15 minutes and then see if code has cleared. This worked for me.
