We have a new RV with a Lippert power awning. Our last RV was 20 years old. The arms on the new one has a knob to tighten on a part of the arms. What does tightening it do?

They allow you to tilt the awning to get better rain run off.  You should loosen it some before retracting awning.  Ours seems to run off fine in moderate rains without tilting.

^ Yup, that's the way mine works. Tightening knobs to hold against strut pressure changes the angle of awning. Just be sure to loosen the knobs before retracting the awning.

without seeing it, MY GUESS is that those knobs control the pitch for rain water?

These electric awnings have spring loaded arms with knobs that allow you to lower 1 side for better rain water drain off...

simply pull down on the roll ( pulling down and towards the RV ) , bring the desired side lower and tighten the knob... OR you can lower BOTH sides together and tighten both knobs.
