Wet bulb, dry bulb comfort measurement.

Wrap the wet bulb thermometer with cheesecloth.

Blow a fan across the bulb.

This is the lowest temperature that evaporative cooling can achieve at that point in time. A very useful tool.

I used a Bacarach sling psychrometer my whole career. The red reading thermometers can't take the heat in a service truck so I switched to Mercury and it always had dead accurate calibrations. The newer AC charging charts go by inside wet bulb for one of the parameters so I checked indoor WB every job.
I went from Denver to Phx. In 03 and I thought I would literally die or have to change careers before I learned how to regulate water, electrolytes and food. I ached and hurt from head to toe when I got home at night! Still, when all the water I could hold and the right electrolytes didn't work, usually about 2 PM, I had to go indoors.
The company finally gave us heart rate/core temp monitors but learning to read my own body was the best. Craig

Mex, if it's any consolation, even California has felt like Acapulco for much of August -- high temps, high humidities, and now add in a lot of smoke. I can tell you it's miserable, even without a wet bulb.

I used to work in an airflow lab. We had a battery powered wet-dry bulb psychrometer to measure humidity.

I found through the school of hard knocks that in dangerously high temperatures that a pure ice slurpee made in a blender can ward off really awful effects. I Make sure I have enough salt in my system then grind ice and stick it in a thermos. I have lowered my body temperature 2+ degrees by eating the ice. I start off slowly but consume a pint or so of shlilusy ice. Too much, too soon may be hard on the body. Alcohol, caffeine or sugar seems to kick my butt. I don't drink but watching other people, beer and booze are both bad for health in broiling temperatures.

If you are properly hydrated, in low humidity, you can think of yourself as as cool, wet bulb guy. In high humidity, . . . your're just another sweaty (maybe stinky) guy.

One way. in fact the most accurate way. to measure humidity requires a dual bulb (one wet one dry) thermometer a piece of string and a book.

You start by slinging the thing around for a bit.
Read both thermometers and note the temps
Look the dry temp up in the book then the wet and where the two cross

HUMIDITY.

Just get a sling psychrometer, (Amazon} I used them at work to determine the wet bulb temp. That's what the 'Feels Like' temp comes from. It's done electronically now, my indoor-outdoor thermometer does it with no slinging. This old tech....heh.
