1st DEF fill up

Filled the DEF for the 1st time today. Took 4.2 gallons. Mileage was 5400. According to the calculator, that equates to just under 1300 miles per gallon. Dash info center said I had 470 miles left on DEF before filling up.. With only a 5 gallon tank, not worth running it empty. BTW, low DEF message came on at 500 miles till empty point.

What are others seeing for miles and DEF useage. Mainly not much towing so far.

Actually they sized it so you could easily drain it on any rocky road. :B

well, that's true as well, been considering putting an aftermarket DEF tank shield on mine.

Just towed 16000# LQ horse trailer 1000 miles, took 3 gallons of DEF to top off, DEF was full beginning of trip. 2011 GMC ext. cab 4x4 duramax/Allison. Truck averaged 9.3 mpg, kept speed at 67 mph and below. That's around 107 gallons of fuel, DEF usage within what GM says is normal....... I guess.

Many of us with Sprinters are finding the manufacturer did not fill the DEF full when the rig was sold. So I think early consumption figures may be off.

Can't say for other diesel rigs.

I use about 5 gallons of DEF on my 2015 denali between oil changes at around 6500 miles. GM says they sized the DEF tank to require filling about every oil change. Going by the oil change interval reading, I'd say they are close but a little optimistic on the DEF tank size.

Thanks for the replies. I can better gauge my semi than I can the pick up. With my semi, it uses about 6-7 gallons per week/2500miles. But really not a fair comparison. I wish Ford put an actual guage for level, but guess it's not one of their better ideas. Was just curious as to what others were seeing for useage. Didn't think that what I got wasn't too bad. Filled up at local Pilot ($2.89/gallon). Will top off again before vaykay.

Two to four gallons DEF per 100 gallons of diesel burned is supposed to be normal usage

1300 miles per gallon is the same as I am getting.

DEF seems like a very minor issue and expense. I do like having an actual gauge so I always know where I'm at vs waiting for a warning light to pop up unexpectedly.

My 2012 just tells me if I am "ok" on DEF or "under half". No gauge to speak of. I quit trying to figure out my DEF usage within the first few thousand miles.

I know it uses more when I am towing my 15,000+ fiver. But while towing I seem to use more when pulling grades as compared to towing across flat areas, or it uses more when fighting a head wind.

I know when I am not towing, I rarely add DEF.

Bought our Chevy (see signature block below) a year ago. I had to add DEF after the first 2000 miles. Then the next 1500. By this time I was getting really worried wondering if this was going to be a costly expense and a horrible truck!

Well, the stretches have gotten longer and longer. I am now at almost 5000 miles since the last oil change and DEF fill up and I still have no warning message.

So, I'm thinking.... there must be some kind of break-in period for this. I know these new vehicles have computers that keep memory and track your driving patterns. It's possible, enough miles are on the truck now the computer has finally figured it all out. (that's only my guess).

But my truck now has about 15,000 miles. Just last week I decided to buy another jug of DEF and have it in the back of the pick-up truck, ready for when the warning comes on again. We've been doing a lot of camping this summer, short and not so short trips, so decided I better be ready when the warning comes on again!

Anyway, that's what I've figured out, it's a break-in period.

By the way, the first fill-up with DEF really threw me for a good loop. We had trailer in tow, on a Friday night. We managed to find a GM dealer on our route. I told them I'd never filled before, had no clue what I was doing. They walked me through it, service guy was really nice coaching me. It took about 4 and 1/2 gallons to fill. Even they were surprised. They said when we bought the truck, the selling dealership probably failed to fill the DEF. There was just enough in the tank when it came from the factory to make it derivable. They said, the selling dealership should have filled it, but it's possible, it was one of those things that could have been missed. This made since to me, and really.... the distances between fill-ups became longer and longer ever since!

Be patient grasshopper. Start tracking the mileage and see if this pattern happens to you too.

Truck in sig. 3,200 miles at 1/4 tank, put 2.5 gallons in went up to 7/8 tank. Who knows what the consumption rate is! Does not seem too bad.

It seems excessive to me. Are you sure it was full when you started?
I don't keep track of mine but in that distance not towing much I would likely use about 2.5 gallons.
