2006 Dodge 3500 4X4 Steering Wander

My buddy has a Dodge pick-up and he complains all the time about steering wander or sloppy steering while driving on the highway. It does this whether unloaded, towing a 32' TT or a 8,000 lb car hauler/jeep.

He has had the alignment checker many times and he has replaced the ball joints, TREs, etc; but nothing has helped.

Anyone had this problem and solved it? I found this on the internet, anyone tried it?

Please help, the whining on the CB has become unbearable. 🙂 🙂

My 98 drove great with those mods and I also changed the steering box to a RedHead 3 turn.

Go to Turbo Diesel Register and (I assume) 3rd Generation forum and do a search. More info than you digest in one sitting.

Get your buddy to lay on his best side in front of truck while, you turn the steering wheel lock to lock. Your buddy should be watching the points where the track bar mounts to frame and front axel, any play means new bushings/track bar. As for an adjustable track bar, if he has a levelling kit or lift kit, he should install one. All the adjustable track bar does is center the front axel (right to left) when any kind of lift is installed. When you install levelling or lift, you are essentially changing angle of the track bar, which in turn pulls the front axel to the right side of the vehicle, then your truck "dog tracks". If he has a stock height truck, an OEM or aftermarket track bar is all he needs.

Might be a bad steering box. Have that checked.

I put the SBS on mine many years ago and immediately noticed a difference. It's especially noticeable coming down a mountain pass with a TT on back.
Not only does it improve handling, it also reinforces the sector shaft coming out of the bottom of the gear and keeps it from wearing and leaking.
He should also make sure the steering stabilizer is still strong.
