I'm looking to buy a 2012 f350 super duty 6.7 TD CC LB 4X4. I'll be pulling a 12,500 lb. 5th wheel trailer. My question is how many miles is too many for this truck? I'm new to diesels and from what I've heard diesels last longer than gas engines, but with no personal experience, I need some help from you diesel experts. If you were buying this truck how many miles would cause you to shy away from the truck?

I never did get the whole fan boi thing?

I bought a lot of good stuff in my life and a few bad things. If a friend ever asked about either I would tell them the good points and the bad points and then they can make up their own mind.

I even get the whole "mine works great" way of thinking but it's not good logic. Case in point is my 5.7 Olds diesel. The 5.7 is THE WORST diesel ever put into a vehicle. The very worst. I own several of them because at the time I got them for a dime on a dollar and wanted to see what was so bad about them. That being said I put 10's of thousands of trouble free miles on my 5.7. Other than oil changes and such I never put a dime in it.

If I didn't know about the reputation of this engine or how it was designed I would be what I call an "ignorantly happy consumer."

I once read where way more than half of the 5.7 diesel owners were happy with their hunks of junk. Over 50%!!!!

My point is, even if my 5.7 diesel has been trouble free doesn't make it a great or even a good engine. They were the worst diesel engine ever put in a vehicle. I admit that and it would be silly to deny.

Unfortunately there are a lot of "ignorant consumers and/or fan boi's" on forums.

Speaking of ignorant, I didn't know about the problem Bill talks about with the 6.7 around the 8 minute mark in this video.

OP it would be good to watch the above video if you are still interested in buying this truck. This problem is included in the year you are looking at.

It's always good to talk to or watch video's of people that work on these things every day of their life.

Thereโ€™s been a few on here with the CP4 injection pump disaster; one of them only had 9k miles and he traded it in for a gas 6.2L while his truck was on the dealership hoist.

I was a die hard Ford man and my last Ford was a 6.0L diesel. I was getting tired of the problems and started looking for a new truck in 2014. About then a lot of the issues that T&P posted about were becoming known. I seriously considered a Ford 6.7L until I saw this and I became determined that I wasnโ€™t going to pay my hard earned money to fix Fordโ€™s shortcomings again. I bought the truck in my signature and have never looked back. I watched a few Powerstroke Help videos by Bill today on the 6.7L issues he has seen and after my head stopped spinning I was very tempted to go out to the garage and hug my Ram! :B

I think overall the 6.7L is much better than the 6.0L and 6.4L, but if you happen to have one of the potential issues with it youโ€™re in for a whole lot of hurt on the pocketbook. JMHO

Same here, just remember someone who feels angry about something is much more likely to complain online loudly. There was ONE fellow here years ago that claimed to have the fuel pump problem. That was the one and only and I never heard what the resolution was in that case.

dont listen to the gloom and doom, tsb's mean nothing they are a way to efficiently repair a condition if it comes up. there is no oasis on valves, fuel pumps , or glow plugs. there was oasis on egt sensors, the sync system and something else that are all covered under there own warenties. for what it is worth I have only heard about the fuel pump on the internet and I know no one who owns, or a mechanic that has ever seen one. not saying it isnt true but it isnt as prevelant as the internet has made out. I went from a 99 to a 14 and I stand by it was the best upgrade I have ever made in trucks, and I loved my 99.

I have 178k on my 2012. Replaced auxiliary water pump and lower radiator hose. Still going strong hopefully for another year or so

Now that I'm at it, I didn't mention valve cracking problems.

I also was remiss in not mentioning the tons of turbo failures they had.

Interesting that Ford fixed ALL of these problems later on. The valve issue were listed up the 2015 in their TSB's. Pretty telling.

The glow plug clown is in error.

The cracked valve problem was poor heat treating and corrected on trucks produced after 3/28/2011.

The TSB you are referring to, I believe, was a noise problem addressed by a customer advisory on how to operate a diesel.

The ceramic turbo bearings did have a higher failure rate than later steel bearings.

Nope: Sorry but you are misinformed.

Tell that to thousands of people that had trucks bought after 3/28/2011.
Here is the TSB for the valve cracking problem with the 6.7 Powerstroke engine.

Do you see the years affected?

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information on a rough running or engine misfire on 2011-2016 Ford 6.7L diesel engines.

According to Ford TSB 16-0041 Ford will replace 8 exhaust valve because of a rough running condition on the 6.7 Powerstroke made before 2/23/2016.

ISSUE:

Some 2015-2016 F-Super Duty 250-450 Pickup vehicles equipped with a 6.7L diesel engine and built on or before 2/23/2016 may exhibit a runs rough/misfire condition only during the exhaust regeneration process. This condition typically occurs on light throttle tip in between 64-113 Km/h (40-70 MPH) and will not set diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). The concern may be intermittent and a knocking noise may be present during the concern. ACTION:

Do you see the dates? Some say the valves weren't make to spec and some say the guides were too tight. Some say it was a glow plug problem. The bottom line is these engines are blowing up for whatever reason. This is the reason they made big changes to the 6.7 after 2015. If the CP4x pump doesn't get you, the valve problem will. If not that the glow plug issue will.........

If anybody asks me about an early 6.7 I tell them to stay away. BTW I do that for an CP4x truck out of warranty......Ford, GM, or Ram. Those pumps are junk IMHO.

If anybody ask me about a 2016 on up truck, I would have a preference but I would take any one of the big 3 diesels. Not so with the older ones.

I know two people who have had the radiator problem. One traded his truck in (on another F250 6.7). One fixed it and is still running it (he still likes it better than the Dodge he had before).

To me it's not just the engine you need to be concerned about. Everything else in the truck wears out too. I guess it all depends on budget, but I am done buying or owning vehicles with more than around 120,000 miles.

I have ~180k miles on my 2012 6.7 Super Duty and the only problems I've had were the EGT sensors, Nox sensor and recently a AC condenser coil. As for the engine and transmission I would say that can go an easy 250k miles.

There's a couple of guys on this thread who like to promote internet amplification and perform the same routine every time so take their claims with a grain of salt. I also have ~20 percent idle hours (>1k hours) and no EGR or soot clogging issues.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another older 6.7 Super Duty but like any used truck you have to give it your due diligence to give the truck a good look over. I'm quite content with my truck and still plan of keeping for the long haul.

BTW; GM also had the same 4.x fuel pump problems. I would not recommend buying one of those trucks out of warranty either. IOW's my recommendation would have been the same, but I would have put up less links for failures. :B
