Too bad the photographer couldn't rip some of that vinyl covering and give us a preview of the new truck before it burned up. :B

The front grill is pretty obvious what it's going to look like.

Very dramatic, but that's why they call it a prototype. The difference is that someone was around to photograph this one and post it on the internet. All manufacturers probably have these things happen from time to time.

Yes, they do. In my 29 years of automotive engineering experience I've seen this happen a few times. Each one that I saw was due to a failure of the instrumentation, not the vehicle itself. Not that that won't happen, but I haven't seen a vehicle failure cause a fire.

Those prototypes that are running in Death Valley have hundreds of thermocouples inserted into all of the fluids so that the temperatures can be datalogged. It is very likely that one of those thermocouples caused a flammable liquid to leak, causing the fire.

Here in Upstate NY we have snowmobile fires all the time. It's amazing whats left after something made of plastic and aluminum burns. Or should I say the lack of whats left. Even the motors melt. If you've ever burned model cars as a kid like we did, you know what I'm talking about!

I guess aluminum on fire will just melt down like solder.

looks like they are testing it hard. Way better to figure this out now then after the release to the public. I don't view this story as a failure at all: just proper testing of their product before release.

I read that the EGR cooler plugged up and it spit out some spark plugs due to the high sulfur diesel fuel used in cleaning out the Urea holding tank in conjuction with the gas protons interacting with Urea Neurons!!!!

This kind of metal fire likes water...splits the H2O and the hydrogen
fuels, while the oxygen feeds that burn

This picture says the aluminum was burning...not just melting...and if
there was magnesium...anyone remember the early VW Beetles burning
to the ground because of their aluminum/magnesium engine/tranny cases?

Norsky...aluminum is a key fuel for solid rocket fuel

When working and assigned to CTO's laboratories...found that the better
scientists all played with fire, explosions, dangerous stuff...laws
of physics...the scientists we though were no good...didn't...

Anyone ever play with taking a match to a wad of 00 steel wool?
