2017 Super Duty is *****

Wow. Went to drive one yesterday and what a pickup it is. F350 ECSB 4x4 Diesel is what I drove. Tons and tons of power, good braking, amazing interior. Good ride, great capability for hauling and towing. ECSB is perfect size for inner city job sites.

Only three problems with the new truck:
1. Wish the 350 SRW came with an 11.5" rear end not 10.7" like Dodge and GM. I overload on our ranch on a weekly basis.
2. Like the new Duramax, the new engine is too quiet. I don't want a 6.0 clatter, but some noise is reassuring.
3. Too expensive. Holy **** these things cost an arm and a leg. Suppose that's 2017 class 3 truck buying for ya.

I really want my forever truck for my upcoming birthday present to myself. If I had the money I'd buy one of each as the Ford, the Dodge (I'm still calling it that, okay) and Chevy make tremendous 1-tons. If I were going dually the choice would be simple as the wide track front end on the F450 is tremendous, unique and a deal maker for me. But as my daily driver I want a SRW, especially with the F550 tatty but still mostly alive and kicking for the really big jobs.

I hope this post won't get bashed as a waste of time. I merely wanted to show that, unlike all too many here, I'm not a brand worshipping sheep. I've slammed Ford for their 6.0 and 6.4 engine disasters, and for running the same floppy frame for 25 years when the others changed theirs. But now, I think the Super Duty is top of the pile. Engine, frame, interior the whole kit and caboodle is top notch.

It's likely going to come down to what 1-ton SRW 4x4 diesel I can get the best deal on. I know whether it's the 2017 GM Duramx, Dodge Cummins or Ford PSD anyone who owns one is one lucky SOAB.

And why would I when I had no intention of driving from Mass to Idaho! Lets get a reality check not all of us have the time or want to invest into making a vehicle purchase into a journey.

I do wish my truck had an actual def gauge instead of the "guess what ford considers to be half" and im sure the air ride adjustable suspension is a nice feature, that's the only thing I would consider adding to my truck.

Like ive said I drove all 3 and liked all of them, it came down to who gave me the deal I liked. Sadly the GMC dealer I went to couldn't find a DRW Denali within 500 miles that I liked.

I'm guessing you did not talk to Dennis Dillon or Dave Smith, both in Idaho.

I did get the same pricing from AutoNation in Seattle but AN beat the he!! out of DS on my trade.

I drove all three also and I just wasn't comfortable in anything but the Ram. I liked the way the GM felt in the seat better than all of them but the layout of the controls sucked for me. I like sitting on the floor and in the Ram the seat is too high for my liking. Hell, I drive the semis and dump trucks with the air completely out of the seats. I guess that's from all the years of driving sports cars.

As for under the hood, they all scared the **** out of me and none of them look like a 69 chevy nova with straight six under the hood!

All I can say here is like some of you guys that had bad luck with ford 6.0 I had bad luck with a cummins 5.9!

That said when I shopped for my current truck I shopped all 3 brands and might have been in a ram right now if they came to the table with a better deal than they did. I believe they all make good trucks that have greatly improved since the 90's!

It makes no sense now, if someone comes on here ,and starts bragging up a 6.0. There is bad with all of them, but as we all know now, the 6.0 was no where near a reliable motor, it was a terrible motor.

There is just no point in saying that someone had a good 6.0 , more then anything they were very lucky, many were not. It wasn't bad luck with the 6.0, they were junk.

The 5,9 was a proven motor, but like anything there can be problems . comparing one over the other makes no sense.

I have owned three PSDs... A 95 which had the best power.. Not on paper, but the best power of all I have owned.. A 97 and an 02.. All 3 were 7.3s... the 95 and the 97 had rear galley plug leaks behind the heads, they both had glow plugs and relay issues. The thing that burnt me the most was changing oil.. Who in the heck made a washer to seal the oil pan??? They would drip oil and id have to replace that stupid washer. Id much rather see a connection rod come out the side of the block than to see oil drips on my garage floor.. The 02 Lariat had a high pressure pump that went belly up. I loved the 02 the best. However, due to buying a larger 5th wheel I traded the 02 in on a New 04 Ram... The Fords ride and comfort was much better Than the ram. However, they Drivetrain on the Ram was far superior to the 7.3...We just bought a 15 Ram Laramie and it has a Cadillac Ride and interior and is super quiet.. Looking at the Ford, it appears to me that Ram has surpassed the Fords... Now with locking tailgates, back up cameras and a bed camera. A real DEF gauge, XM, Connect, rear auto leveling rear suspension. Puck system, ... and all... I looked at the Ford and when we raised the hood it was like,OMG where is the engine?...Im sure the Fords are great... I just prefer the Rams.... The Cummins Aisin is a Great Combo....

Over a year a half later and 26K we are still high five'ing each other over our 2015 Laramie.

Chris

Three years with my Cummins, and after six recalls , I think things have smoothed out , hopefully. No high five'ing .

Wish you the best of luck... These type of problems can be frustrating.

Recalls can be frustrating, but the DEF issues on the Rams, are fast becoming an issue. Again hopefully thru some recalls, flashes or whatever they can be straightened out :h

I picked up my ordered 2017 F 350, King Ranch, CC, SB, SRW, PSD a month ago. What a great truck. The ride, interior and exterior is head and shoulders above the '09 F250, Lariat, V-10 I sold 2 weeks ago. Looking forward to my first tow in 2 weeks with our TT.

How much of a troll do you have to be to imply that overall the 6.0 Powerstroke was/is more reliable than a 5.9 Cummins?

Anecdotal experience aside, there is just no way to defend that. Sure, there absolutely were 6.0's that were reliable. And I know there were some 5.9's that were not. But the fact is that the 6.0 cost Ford BILLIONS in warranty. That isn't the case with the 5.9.

Just look at resale values. That should tell you something right there.

But, when you buy a truck that was bombed, used hard, and put away wet, you might have problems. And when you (or your neighbors, sisters, hair dresser's Facebook friend) told you that........... Oh, never mind.

" But every bit as reliable as the Cummins nonetheless."

That is where I have to disagree. The other things you said I can understand.

I agree with the OP, the new Fords are quite an amazing truck. And yes, if you need the ultimate tow rig, the F450 with the wide track front axle and 4.30's is the way to go!

I pulled the trigger on a 15' F450 myself last year, only because I preferred the old bodystyle more then the new.

I'm a contractor and have put 32k hard miles on the truck in the last 12 months. It has proven to be the most capable truck I've ever owned. I can only imagine the new 17's will prove to be even better.

Obviously if you were one of those burned by a 6.0 or 6.4 failure, I can understand your reluctance to give Ford another chance. That's your right, and hey SOMEBODY has to buy the Chevy's and Rams's. However, the 6.7 Ford's have proven to be extremely reliable. More complicated? Perhaps. But every bit as reliable as the Cummins nonetheless.
