3/4 ton gasser gas mileage?

Monday we are going to try out a 3/4 ton gas Silverado 3/4 ton, 4.1 axle ratio, 4WD. Going from a Tundra because we've run out of GVWR on the truck (because we take too much stuff).

We get 8-9 MPG in the Tundra towing 8K lbs. What kind of gas mileage is anyone getting in the 3/4 ton gas Chevy's or GMC's with similar gear ratio --- solo and towing ???

And it did take a while before a typical diesel owner reply appeared without a hint what so ever concerning the OP. :S

If you want a rig to pull something, why not get a real 3/4 ton or better yet a one ton? Why not join the winning team and get a diesel?

I get 23 mpg empty, 18 towing a 19 foot boat and about 13-14 towing a TT. The engine is not even working hard.

I stand corrected... by at least a 1/3! They just keep getting stronger and more capable. But again, be sure to look at that yellow sticker and make sure a 3/4 ton can haul around your family, tools and boxes, hitch, eats, gas and animals! Subtract that from your payload and that's what you REALLY have at your disposal. I guess I have sour grapes from an older Ford F250 diesel that only had 1800lbs of payload. When you put the gasser back in the mix you get back 800lbs of payload.

Toyota marketing label committee were idiots.
If Americans will pronounce GP as Jeep, how will they pronounce TRD?

I'd be happy to own one but I would have the dealer strip the TRD off as part of the sale!

OP, if you are happy with your current truck and it mostly meets your usage requirements, strongly consider a TT weight reduction program.

My 2014 Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi was just over 3000 lbs payload as per the door sticker. The kind of payloads you are referencing would be about right for a 2500 series with the diesel engine and all the options. They are usually around 2000 - 2300 lbs.

Agreed. Check out the dyno charts below. Chevy is significantly down on power.

How old is the new truck you are looking at?

With the new transmissions with lots of gears, you probably won't lose a lot of MPG with a deep rear end ratio (nor really need one) as the truck can pick a gear ratio that doesn't force the engine to run high RPM for freeway speeds (particularly when towing).

Never say never, BUT.... I would NEVER get a 3/4 ton. They ALL have a 10,000 GVWR. Now-a-days, they can all pull over 16,000lbs! ...and have great GCWR up to 22,000lbs and OVER! Crazy and very, very capable, but if you look at the yellow door sticker on any of those trucks with any kind of cab and bed and you're gunna see 1700lbs, 1900lbs MAX payload. Now you put yourself, your cat and all your tools and hitch and gear... AND you won't have 1000lbs for the pin weight. You're 100% on when you say get the 4.10 gears in the Chevy and Ram, get the 4.30 in the Ford (for the gas version.) ...but again, sorry the Chevy is the DOG in this class with the WORST max carry of only 14,000ish lbs EVEN in a 1 ton! (again we're talking gasser's here.)

Ford 6.2L with 4.30 rear, OR Ram 6.4L with 4.10 whatever cab or package you like. I'm a SuperCab Long Bed man myself. Both will have 3500 - 4000lbs payloads, 14,000 trailer/15,500 5th wheel and 23,000 GCWR. Put some bags on it and DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!

Just my VERY NARROW 2 cents worth.... Do what YOU like and Happy Hunting.

Ok, so my 09 in Florida gets 13.5-15 city and 17 hwy at 70mph. Pulls 10k, not a weak engine by any means... on paper is lower on hp and TQ compared to other gas options but according to test out there, it has zero problems keeping up or beating the other offerings. The 6.0 is no slouch, I’ve owned 2 of them and they pull very well for a gas engine. Oh and pulling 10k i get 8.0-9.0 in Florida. I have seen it as high as 9.5 mpg but don’t trust the truck computer. Oh and the figures I gave are hand calculated, I average 8.5 when pulling camper around 65mph. With 92k on the clock and paid for, she will stay with me a long time.
A truck, a camper, a few toys, but most importantly a wonderful family.

Our 6 liter Burb with 4wd gets 14 empty every day. Never pulled with it, no need to.

I'll take a 350 V8 over a Turd motor anyday. Better yet a 400. I'd say 10-12 towing if sane and 14 unladen (if sane again) don't expect mileage going like a bat out of hell, won't happen.
