Almost 90 ,000 Truck sales for GM in July

GM twins outsell Ford in July. Colorado and canyon just keep moving up. GM trucks together almost hit 90,000. Ford trucks 65,000. GM says they are going to pump out more production because they have been holding back to be more conservative.

With $10,000 in rebates on the GM twins they had better be out selling everyone! There was five billboards on I-75 in Tenn and Kentucky saying $10,000 off all Silverado and Sierra pickups. The disclaimer was " oldest in stock trucks"!

That will cut into the ole profit margin! Doesn't do you a lot of good selling at a loss does it tnutz?

The Big 3 all offer big discounts, and you know that. GM is just marketing it different.

Also, truck sales across the board have the highest profit margins of any vehicles. So $10k is nothing more than a blip, especially when referring to the oldest inventory.

1. Ford F-Series as usual

I was looking at the sales numbers, in the chart for the top 11 trucks and I was struck by the fact that the only truck Ford offers is the F series. Yup, possibly the Ranger will come back, but if you want a Ford, the F series is the only game in town, right now.

GM has 4 out of the 11 top sellers, on this chart. GM offers choice, if you want a GM full size truck, you can choose from either a GMC or Chevy full size...or a GMC or Chevy if you want mid size.

When you add up the total sales in the chart of the four GM's, GM sells significantly more trucks than does Ford.

Reminds me of the situation we had in Canada back in the period 1947 to 1968. In that period, you could buy either a full size Ford or Mercury truck. If your preferences were GM, you could buy either a GMC or Chevy full size pickup. GM generally sold more pickups than Ford in that period. Ford had two truck models, GM had two.

In March, 1968 Ford cut the Mercury pickup. Within the next model year or so, in Canada, Ford pickup sales numbers were a bit higher than Chevy and Ford began to take the # 1 spot in truck sales in Canada. But then GM was still selling both GMC and Chevy pickups and generally more pickups per model year.

To me, it seems the same deal in modern times with the sales numbers between Ford and GM trucks. GM has more total sales numbers as they offer more choice (4 pickup models vs Ford F series)while Ford concentrates all their marbles on the F series and pick up the # 1 spot.

I think any accountant would look at total numbers sold, rather than who has the # 1 model. More sales, more money for the company coffers.

BTW, I'm not anti Ford. Back in 1968-69, my family's business had a new Mercury M 250 Pickup with the 300 inline six and three on the tree. Great general purpose, business truck, reliable and could more than carry it's weight, It was one of the last Mercury pickups ever built by FoMoCo of Canada.

I'm just gonna say that Ford has got to be a bit irritated at the demand for smaller trucks. I seem to remember Ford mouthpiece saying something along the lines of F-150 is a suitable replacement for the Ranger... The rate that GM is bringing in buyers from other brands for the Colorado/Canyon is alone enough to consider the twins a success.

The Honda numbers is what blew me out of the water. I think they put a frame under it this year didn't they? The mid size trucks are a great option for a lot of people. I've always liked the little trucks. I've had 4 myself and loved them.
