America’s Wildflowers, On the Road in a Truck Camper Pt 2

In honor of the First Day of Spring, I thought I would return to posting my thread of America’s Wildflowers on the Road in a Truck Camper. The last time we did this was more than 2 years ago so it is long overdue. At least for those of us that search out and enjoy the wildflowers in this grand country we live in.

Hopefully many of you will find this as a challenge to post here too! Your discoveries and your favorite flowers you see and enjoy while traveling in your truck Campers. The rules? There is only one, please keep the flowers you post here ones that are not in a yard or any formal flower garden. Yes, a wildflower bed would be fine, but not one you found in the flower section of the Home Depot.

Ahh, yes, for those two that mentioned that this was not TC content, before, understand that we are enjoying these wildflowers as much as you enjoy the museums, the fishing pictures, boat pictures and an occasional horse shows. Because I enjoy all those, as well.

Please post your favorite Wildflower pictures here too!!!

But, for Truck Camper content, I will open with one I captured on a past photography hunt, with a good buddy that brought his own camera along, too.

Desert Five-Spot Ermalche rotundifolia

Claret-Cup Cactus Echinocereus triglochidiatus

Saguaro Cactus Carnegiea gigantea

Prairie Wild Rose Rosa arkansaa

Dune Evening Primrose ~ Oenothera californica eurekens

Sunflower Helianthus annuus

Canadian Thistle Cirsium arvense

Those that know me know that I have hundreds of Wildflowers to post. But, how about some of you post some of your favorite wildflower photos too. Just a change in how we post here. Like my previous wildflowers thread, surprise me!

WVbassmitress ~ Glad that reaction occurred. I wish more would take the time to comment, as many know, contributors enjoy knowing that there are others appreciating their contributions.

Reddog1 ~ Always fun to read your thoughts and contributions. You certainly have a wonderful area for wildflowers and the beautiful gardens surrounding you.

exhaustipated ~ Being a home grown Kansas boy, myself, you will see some of my postings, including earlier of my favorite state. There is such a mosaic of flowers there, like the Prairie Wild Rose, I look forward to you contributing too!

Tiger4X4RV ~ Whenever I am down in this country I watch the scene to see if I see you wandering too. Please keep posting your flower photos, as you get to some amazing country too.

Dadwolf2 ~ It is clear you have been working on your composition and subjects, since the last time we shot together. Keep shooting and sharing. For one, I will certainly enjoy your results. Especially the bugs!

c.traveler2 ~ Alex, it is always a treat to see your contributions. Even more so I am anxious to see your work from the 10—24mm lens. Maybe an upward shot so we can see the pronounced bend of the subjects from the lens?

Nycsteve ~ Yeah, even though I no longer have a yard or my massive wildflower gardens to view or tend, I make up for it by walking through the nurseries I travel past or the scenes I witness during my continuing adventures.

Trackhead ~ Watching your recent photographic contributions, I was hoping you would and will continue to contribute. We have some amazing photographers in this forum and hope to see more from you.

GoinThisAway ~ I was looking forward to you joining in, too. But we have the whole season to contribute. So stock up, fill the tank and head to NM. We know you love it out there.

Dave Pete ~ You are always welcome to find us out here in the boondocks or on this page, contributing. There is no time limit of when you captured an image, either. In fact I plan on sharing some I took more than 40 years ago. Just to show the progression of my photography and my continued passion for wildflowers.

DJ ~ Anything the DW does qualifies! We don’t see the ground cover sedums and other low story flowers. Thanks for adding those and of course, my favorite; the Moose with Flowers!

Pjay9 ~ Hey Capt! Good to see you here. Yeah, saw your pictures. You have a big project this year. Whenever you wish to contribute, I know I will be waiting to see them. Especially like your contribution of exotics.

Silversand ~ Always anxious to see what you come up with. Like the last one we did here, 2 years ago, it is fun to see the difference locales. Just don’t remind us of the slush and ice!

Possibly?

Please, anyone wanting help to identify the flowers, just ask, and if anyone knows, please respond!

To aid in classifying photos it is helpful to include;

Location
Stem/leaves
Time of year
Interior mechanics of the flower

It's too early here for any flowers except daffodils and my first trip won't be for a few weeks yet. So I'll just sit back and enjoy the photos from the desert travelers of the group for now. Should be able to get the camper out in April though and there should be lots of PLF blooming then!

Thanks BKA and everyone else for the reminder of what spring should bring. Some look better than whats available at the garden store. This thread has me thinking of my Dad, he liked hiking and always brought a few books to help id the local flora. Still have his books, but they're not in English 🙂

Just superb submissions, everyone! What a great start for the 2015 Flower Season. Hopefully we will get even more, as things warm up and we see flowers blooming all throughout this country.

Your comments allow more to want to post their own pictures here. Even if they have never posted a Trip Report or started a thread. Here is an opportunity to get one's feet wet, maybe even literally as you chase that elusive flower. If you don't know what it is, ask and someone can help identify it, or not. They are all "PLF"s in my Botany Class, from long ago. Oh, "Pretty Little Flower."

Thanks Alex, for providing the requisite Truck Camper content as well. Well done, in fact.

Simple flower photography tips

1 Get in Close
2 Find out the time of day a particular flower blooms the best
3 Mid Day is a great time, as most flowers have fully extended for the day
4 Group your photos so there is contrast with another (example is my Sunflower Picture)
5 Experiment with Abstract (like below or the big pie cut shot of the sunflower, above)
6 The Charley Brown Flower is often the best one to shoot
7 Remember your background is a large part of your shot (c.traveler does that wonderfully with the Primrose in the foreground and his truck out of focus in the background.)
8 A point-n-shoot camera has many controls to do shots like the above ones, play with these. Particularly the one that has the Icon as a tulip (close up, which is good for taking pics of information sign exhibit signs in museums and at geysers)
9 Love bugs, get lots of bugs in them too!
10 Oh, yeah. Get in close!
11 Well, there needs to be Eleven Tips. Right? Make sure your battery is charged, too. Don't ask me why I remind you about this, either. Can you say Carlsbad Caverns? Don't remind me.

Please don't concern yourself about your photos and what and how they compare to others. For me, I am more interested in the type, color and identifying them. I like seeing them all! Like Alex's

Desert Chicory ~ Rafinesquia neomexican

which is such an important plant for so many medicinal purposes and spices, as well. Like the Primrose, it takes so many forms, like the one below, is a Horse of a Different Color, well Chicory, too.

Chicory ~ Cichorium intybus

Mark's a funny looking wildflower!

All of my pictures are from Mojave National Preserve. First week in April I'll be hiking in MNP again. Locally I noticed the cactus buds getting fat and the globe mallow just starting to pop. There is something special about desert flowering shrubs and flowers that have such a struggle to survive and can produce beauty at the same time.

Is it Happy or Merry Spring??
