Camping in Destin, FL in 1962

I found this old photo where I went camping with my Uncle and Aunt in Destin, FL back in 1962. I'm not sure what the make of the trailer was? Anybody recognize it?

I went back to Destin, FL in the late 80s and couldn't believe how the place had grown. In 1962 there was only one RV park there and no motels in the area where we were staying. The RV park was actually in what they call Emerald Beach now. There was one fishing pier about a mile from the RV park and fishing was great off of that pier. Amazingly I was able to find some of the pilings still embedded in the sand on the beach on my trip back in the 80s. I would guess they're long gone now.

There were only 3 or 4 other trailers in the park during the time we stayed there. I remember one was an Air Stream owned by a retired military man and his two daughters from Australia. I fell in love with Pedi she was 15 and I was 13. 😄

If I had known then what I know now I would have bought property that summer instead of buying the motor scooter that I paid $175.00 for. The government was selling, actually giving, property away back then at $14 an acre in the area in order to get people to move there. You couldn't buy an eighth inch square piece of property there for that price today.

This is awesome, we go to Destin every year, and it's nothing like your description of yesteryear!

Love the picture. How old were you? (approximately of course)

Another thing that has changed is the way things are now a lot of campgrounds would not let you in with a camper that that had a Window AC in the front of it.

Anyway....

The camper looks more like the pictures I'm seeing of a 1950s Bolas Aero than a Kenskill. (Rounded windows and the cap on the side seams).

Unfortunately, the photo-posting assistant is being persnickety so I can't post the photo. 🙂

EDIT: Let's see if this works:

Awww. I think he looks very "James Dean-ish". You'd never catch JD in a pair of Bermudas.

No answer about the trailer - Kenskill maybe?
