Camping trip breakdowns????

Own a 2012 f350 diesel and love the truck. However, last week check engine light came on and took to dealer and they did not really find a solid reason. Can,t remember code. Loose wire with corrosion......
Anyhow ,one week later light back on. Still drives great. Not good enough for me.
We are leaving on a big trip to Califormia this Saturday and dropped truck off at dealer.
Have any of you worried about this before? Putting 7000 km on this trip and need reliability with young family.
Anyone with similar issue ? Pull into dealer for help?

Thanks

I agree on making sure everything is ok before heading out. I just came back from dropping off my '06 F350 at the night drop off because I am concerned about my next trip. Last time out, temp rose above normal every time I went up a hill, and coolant came out of the degas bottle. Left it at one dealer for a week, and they couldn't find the problem. I'm thinking head gaskets, hopefully not, but we shall see. Planned on heading out next weekend, so hope all goes well. Good luck with your truck.

That sounds like a classic sign your 6.0L is about to cost you a whole lot of money. The egr cooler coolant passages become restricted and/or clog, the coolant flash boils due to reduced flow which lacks the ability to absorb the amount of heat it needs to, and the first sign is that the degas bottle pukes coolant. The oil cooler is likely on it's way out too.

Ricatic's experiences notwithstanding here, the CEL light on my 2011 6.7L Powerstroke diesel has come on one time only.

Had a service appointment scheduled for it. Almost brand new at the time.

But, underneath truck messing around for the (at the time) first drain of the low mounted fuel filter when I noticed the drain knob was very loose.

Drained as recommended, tightened things up and CEL light (which had still been on) went off and has never shown up again.

Glad the dealer was able to isolate the problem and you now can take your trip worry free. Enjoy!

Chevys get a CEL if you don't put the fuel cap on tight or if it decides you went too many miles without changing your fuel filter. I change mine when it plugs. It will start losing some power long before it plugs.

Update
Dealer did a manual regen to check for faults and found two problems.
Grounds needed to be cleaned up on wire connections somewhere and EGT sensor 14 fault and was replaced.
I agree that this was missed last week when in for light on.
Hope this is only issue.
Dame these newer diesels are so impressive in the torque ,towing, yet so picky!!!!
Looking forward to Saturday departure and burning some better quality fuel in the USA!!!!
Will drive some prior to make sure all is well. Dealer put 40 kilometers on the test drive.

Thanks again for replies.

Glad the dealer dug a little deeper to get the symptoms to show up again. Should make the trip a little more relaxing. 🙂

Give me a 94 Dodge/Cummins any day for long hauls, and a later model for around town. When they have to smother the diesel with electronics, might as well purchase a gas truck if you want reliability, because the mpg advantage went out the window as well.

It's really important to know the code. It could be nothing or it could be something important.

Some new trucks have sensors that can shut the engine down if out of spec. This is something you would not want to happen on your vacation.

It sounds like they missed the problem the first time. I hope they get it right the second time so you can have a piece of mind when you leave.

Let us know what you find out.

CEL's are normal according to Ricatic on the 2011 models. Just search his user name for more information. I'd just keep up with your plans, what could possibility go wrong :W

Exactly... And the Dodge boys are almost exclusive to CEL's with '13-'14 Cummins power trucks. Some don't even make it from the dealer lot to their drive way without a CEL. :W

Is that the warning light that tells them to get to a GM dealer immediately and trade it in for a good truck?

Apparently so, Ric.

Fords do not have this problem, ever. I'm sure that the check engine light currently on in my 04 Ford van is nothing more than my own imagination.

Truth be told (unlike some quoted above), I have owned many Ford, GM, and Chrysler products, and most of them have been good. I've had equal issues with all of them.

I got lucky again on my 2014 Ram, no CEL's yet. 🙂

Big reason I went to a Ram from 16 years with a Superduty, didn't like the idea of an imploding fuel system on the 6.7 Fords. Now does this happen just before the CEL or just after. I will check with Ricatic he should have the correct answer
