Question: What was the difference between a Chevy Silverado 1500HD and a 2500? Both have heavy axles and the larger V8.

I'm dying. Don't you know you need a 1 ton dually diesel to tow pop up. LOL.

Couple of folks have asked me why I didn't get a diesel. I had no need. I am towing around 7500lbs. "Well you will be under trucked" I just nod my head and move along.

The 1500HD and 2500 are fine for towing and hauling a lot of different things. Not everyone wants or needs a diesel.

Lower GVWR on the 1500HD. Echoing what DRSteve posted, It was 8600 GVWR.

My brother had a 2003 1500HD.

I don't think it had the "Powerdome Hood" (as GM called it), which was the taller hood that the 2500HDs have.

2500HD of that era was 9200 GVWR.


As far as component differences between the two trucks, I don't know what all was different.

I know springs were different, and I think the spring hangers on the frame were taller, I remember this when comparing my 2500HD to his 1500HD.


If I remember correctly, the 2500HD came out in 2001. Prior to that the 2500 was a non HD designation, and could have been 8600 GVWR.

The door tag posted says it all about the '00-'06 1500 HD 6.0 engine 4L80 tranny . Mention the 1500 HD and some uninformed members say it can't pull anything but a small TT or popup.
Now the newer 1500 GMs come with a NHT package at 7600 gvwr and 4300 rawr with the 5.3 or 6.2 engines 6/8 speed trannies. The newest year models may have the new 10 speed trannies.

There was a 2500 LD at 7200 gvwr and 4900 rawr 350 engine and 4L60 tranny 9.5" 4.10 axle. I had one and worked great for 234k mile before giving it to my 16 year old GS.

Then later the 2500HD came out with the larger AAM 11.5" rear axles. Heavier built truck all around for the Dmax.

We had a 2001 1500HD, and it performed very well. At the time we towed a 30ft Jayco fifth wheel that weighed 7k pounds. We went all over the US without issue, it is a good truck.
Now we have a 40ft fifth wheel, and a 3500HD dually.

Thanks for pictures drsteve. Was thinking the base weight was around 5500-5700 lbs, leaving one with about 3000 lbs of payload!

All the naysayers about this truck, those thinking less than a ton of payload, can go home!

Well, I've had two Chevrolets a truck and the Suburban. Neither time was I looking to buy a Chevy and both have been very good vehicles. Both times I was looking at other brands and found a deal too good to pass on. I think I am becoming a fan of Chevy. My grandfather was a "Ford man". When I was a kid I would listen to him argue with other farmers about which truck was best. When he died in 1986 he still had a sweet 1969 F100. My dad, having left the farm for the university, sold that old truck. Being enamored with an old truck wasn't within his reality paradigm. Somehow I got all the redneck. I wish I had that old truck. It would be my daily driver. Nevertheless, I have come to believe that there ain't a dimes worth of difference between Chevy and Ford. Both have made awesome trucks and a few losers. Nevertheless, I see 1500HD's around and that plays into my wheelhouse, as they say. I wrench on my own cars and trucks unless it requires removing engine, transmission or differential. Not because I can't but, my neighbors would freak. And I wouldn't blame them.

I've got a 2002 1500HD with 231,000 miles on it. I bought it new, and it's been a great truck. Payload I think is 1875lbs, and tow capacity is 10k. It does a pretty good job pulling my TT that is about 8,000 lbs loaded. You end up in 3rd gear on the interstate at about 3000 rpms.
I keep thinking about getting a new truck, but they are so expensive, and this one just keeps on going.

1500HD is the same as the 2500 non-HD. Great trucks.

1500HD as Mike noted, is for all intents and purposes, an 8600 gvwr 2500 C6P heavy payload, with a 1500 badging to 8200 gvwr.
If you have access to buying one, need a truck that can carry 3000 lbs plus or minus 200-300 lbs in good shape etc, go for it! I would have no issues toting a 10-12 k trailer behind it, as long as I could stay with in axle ratings if around 9500 lbs total iirc. 6000 rear, 3500 or so for front.

If you are talking late 90's to 2007 6.0/4L80E trucks
The 2500 is the same as a 1500HD
The 2500 became the 1500HD
They had a semi floating 9.5 inch rear end.
They were an 8200lbs gross weight truck.

The 2500HD 6.0/4l80E trucks had a full floating 10.5 inch 14 bolt rear end.
They were a 9200lbs gross weight truck.
The rear section of the frame was larger.
