First trip and first major failure

First trip of the year was Memorial weekend. Got 20 miles out of town and my truck died. Engine light, no power. Pulled over and checked the code and it said #2 injector dead. Ok. shut it down. Clear code. Fire it back up. Ran ok. Headed back home and called shop hoping they could drop an injector and get back on the road.
Nope. High pressure pump went out sending filings through the system. So 6 injectors, lines, pump. NO camping trip.

I am now $5K later and it runs like a dream. Been out a couple times.

To be honest. I got the truck for $10K under book and it has 221K miles on it and this is the first major issue. Those were stock parts. I certainly got my money out of those parts.
I love this truck.

With my 92 Cummins going on 400k always ever fill up use Stadyine fuel treatment.

For 25 yrs never had a issue with water in fuel or injecter problems.

Water or gas exposure will kill a CP3 pump or shorten it's lifespan one way or another. Gas expose can cause one to grenade to some extent and still function for a while. Also another problem that will kill these pumps/injectors is refueling diesel from a galvanized tank.

The HPFP has always been the weak link in a diesel fuel system and the CP3 pump is not bullet proof as some would like to think.

I lost the pump on my 2003. I had one or two injectors go at the same time (I don't remember how many, I ended up replacing them all). I was told that the pump failing starved the injectors which caused them to fail.

For the record, I was also running a tuner at the same time. I am sure that did not help the situation.

Something to consider, you said "fired it back up, ran alright."
That doesn't happen if the injection pump grenades. Period.
It doesn't even happen if the ip blows a seal or loses any compressing ability.
221kmi, it was likely due for injectors anyway unless it had secondary filtration its whole life and added lubricity to the fuel, but the rest doesn't pass the sniff test as honest mechanic work.

X2. Something doesn't sound right.

That's unfortunate and you are out $5000.

I will reserve my comments re a CP3 pump failing and taking out some other stuff. I was under the impression that the CP3 pump was rock solid.:h

Based on this forum that never happens to Ram, only Ford. At least to hear the Ram guys tell it anyway.

Did it ever have a diesel additive added to your fuel? Most of the failures I've heard about on the Mafia forums they simple stop without sending metal through the entire system.

I just paid $7000 for a similar failure. Bent valves, pushrods, cam follower disintegrated and left parts in the engine. Two new injectors. Mine runs pretty good now, too. Mine happened in the parking lot at work. It would have sucked to have it happen on the road.

I thought CP3's didn't send parts down line on failure?
Sounds like a bargain for new HP pump and six injectors, and lines.

Glad you got it on the road again. Sorry your trip was ruined. As an RVer I always just hate to see anyone broke down while on a road trip. No matter what brand etc. Fuel pump eh? Guess it could happen to any of em. Wonder if you got bad fuel? Sounds like you're good to go now though.

Well, at least you were only 20 miles out. I like my Ram also but I'm only at 113,000 miles. Keep your filters changed and I bet it will run a long time now.
