GMC 2500HD instead of a Ford F250 for our 5th wheel...

OK, went out today wanting to get a Ford 250 to tow our Highland Ridge 5th wheeler LF315BHS, with a weight of 8900LBS. Now, the F250 only (in our opinion) rides conformable if it is the Lariat edition ....The Lariat is also to expensive. So, how does the GMC 2500HD stack up against the F250, for towing that 5th wheel?

Thanks,

If you are buying a $50k plus truck, do your research, take your time and don't settle for what you find on dealer lots. Get it built exactly as you want. You won't regret it. You won't have to pay more to order.

Does Ford offer a 35-ish gallon tank on the 6.5' bed trucks yet? GM does which makes a huge difference in towing tank range. Otherwise, both perform very well. Let the wife pick and you'll both be happy.

My work truck, a 2012 F250 with the 6.2 has a 38 gallon tank IIRC. I know it's well over 34. It rides fairly decent for a 3/4 ton truck.

On the 250/2500/350/3500 trucks, choose the one you like. They are all very capable vehicles. Half-tons are a different story.

I know some will advise you to look at a 3500, but from my experience you will be hard pressed to find any to choose from on lots. This is especially true if you are looking exclusively at GMC and not Chevy. You will have a much better selection of 2500 to choose from, especially if you are open to a Silverado. Only difference between Sierra and Silverado are trim packages and extra frills on Sierra. Beyond that it's just personal preference on looks.

I am happy with truck in my signature below. If you are doing serious Towing over 11k gvwr fifth wheel do yourself a favor and get a 3500/350 SRW. You may have to order it.
If over 14k fifth wheel and serious towing get a DRW.
Just my opinion.

According to your sig, you already have a new F250. Why are you asking? Need 2 but don't know how the first one drives?

Save some time, Fords s uck! Go get the GMC! But not a Chevy, General Motors assembles the Chevys with all the trainees and once they graduate they get to build GMCs. That's why GMC is professional grade! Waaaaay better quality than Chebby.

I'm partial to the GM 6.0, but either will do.

The GM with 6.0 is tried and true. The 250 Ford with 6.2 has been trouble free. There should be no difference in ride on the 250s. The XLT seats are comfy. Make sure the tires are aired the same, as it will make a big difference comparing ride.

Very true. Either should handle your 11K GVWR trailer. Make sure when comparing rides the tire pressure is the same for a true apples to apples comparison. Drop tire pressure much and it generally rides better. Any of the 250/2500 trucks should handle your load fine. Pick the one you like best and are more comfortable with. Test ride all of them. Good luck. Keith

based on experience I've had with my 2015 duramax, friends 2015 F250 diesel and another camper with a 2010 dodge cummins, it IMHO really boils down to which one YOU like driving and riding in BEST. ALL are very capable and reliable. My advice, take some test drives and then decide.

And, at least with GM, the 3500SRW and 2500HD are virtually identical pricing for the same trim level and options. So, if you can find a 3500SRW, I'd seriously consider it. Likely similar with ford and dodge.

We looked when we got our 2015 Denali, but while there were 2500HD's with options we wanted, the 3500SRW short box were pretty scarce so we ended up with the 2500HD.

This is an older test but not much has changed since then. Maybe a few tweaks here and there or some body work. But performance wise the 2015-16 should be the same.
