Greasing the hitch

Since you all have been awesome at helping me out, time to ask another question.

Should I be greasing my weight distribution hitch arms and ball? If so, with what?

Reese Hitch Ball Lube

Now that's funny $10 bucks for 3.2oz.of genuine "Reese hitch lube".
It always amazes me how much people over-think such simple things. If there is metal to metal contact and it's going to move then yes is should have some grease, ANY KIND of grease.
Just say no to the payload police :C

I use several layers of wax paper on the ball. No grease on pants or other things but lube everything else with a high pressure grease (red) that is used with a grease gun. One tube will last a lifetime.

The Eaz-Lift ReCurve R3 and R6 require both a greased ball and a shot of grease on the shaft. The R6 also requires grease on the sway control bearings.

I like the blue grease rated for marine applications. It is more water proof.

Depends on the hitch. Andersen and Recurve hitches don't require ball grease as the hitch ball moves with the tongue.

Someone makes hitch grease which is what I carried because it came in a small plastic container. I don't think the grease was anything special. After ruining a couple of pairs of pants, I used a foam hitch ball cover when not towing which worked well.

Don't grease points where the hitch relies on friction for anti-sway properties. My Reese had friction pads similar to brake material.

I never used grease, as it attracts dirt , sand and other abrasive stuff. A dry lube like a graphite spray does a good job and is not messy or attracts dirt. proper Set up and sizing of a WDH hitch is more the issue. Lubeing will help with the creaks and groans, however as far as I know, wear from an un lubed hitch has not been a problem. They outlast both the tow and towed without noticeable wear.
All of my WDH hitches were basic Reese with right sized bars with chains to 'sturrup' type tensioners. some movement yes, little to wear. More complex hitches may demand more lube.
Think on this, a WDH hitch is a very slightly movably part that only is moving during hard turns. The purpose for it is to stabilize, equalize the weight between axles, thus reducung the effect of the Tail wagging the Dog.
To also reduce that effect, in comes the simple sway brake, or the old proven reese 'cam ' style sturrup bar end sturrup. Reese recommended in those old days to not use grease, as friction was a necessary part of the sway control.

I grease and spray dry lube on entire WDH to eliminate the popping sounds.

What is the hitch manufacturer's recommendations? When we had our trailer (hitch was Reese Straight Line), Reese recommended good old Vaseline for the hitch ball and the ends of the trunnion bars. Was nice because you could completely wipe it clean at the end of a trip before storing the hitch in the belly compartment.

Metal to metal contact, you should use a lubricant.

I grease my hitch ball and the pivot points on the head of my Equal-i-zer brand WDH. I use white lithium grease. I find it does quiet things down some. I also keep a roll of the blue rag on a roll shop rags in the front hatch handy.
