Have a new Zipper

So far this year I have been trying to decide which truck I wanted and had finally made up my mind, but couldn't buy until we found a new camper. Camper had to come first as wasn't sure if I needed a SRW or DRW. Was just ready to start making some road trips to look at used and new campers when I got hit with the unexpected.

Woke up on a Monday just not feeling well. Most folks would have figured fatigue or cold onset and probably just gone back to bed. Despite not having any pain or indication of something serious, I had my wife call 911 to take me to the hospital. The hospital agreed something was wrong, but since I didn't have any chest pain, they were not in a hurry and believe they only admitted me to the cardiologist because I figured out I was having a heart attack. They actually held me in ER, without monitors, oxygen, or supervision for 3-1/2 hours.

My cardiologist was making his rounds just after finally being admitted and paid a visit. He figured it was just time to clean out his handiwork (stent) from 14.5 years early. So next day I went under his inspection only to find out there was nothing he could do as everything was to blocked, he couldn't begin to get his tools up my veins. To make matters worse, my heart was so stressed, they couldn't do anything else for 24 hours until after a blood vessel pump worked over night to provide my heart with enough oxygen to recover somewhat.

Next day, went under the knife for a quadruple bypass. Had a few minor bumps recovering in ICU, but the docs jumped on them and quickly brought them under control. After a week, I was released and went home. Kept feeling lightheaded when I stood, but a minor prescription adjustment resolved that issue.

Now, three weeks after the surgery, I'm getting bored at home, walking the block couple times a day, and eager to get back on track getting my new toys. Can't wait until 6 weeks when I can start driving again and soon after that get back to camping, even if it isn't in my new rig. Old Blue and Itty Bitty will have to make a few more trips.

So, just a warning. If you think it could be your heart, don't hesitate, get it checked out. I've had two heart attacks now, neither one had any of the usual signs, I just knew. If I had waited until the next day this time, I probably wouldn't have made it.

For those that are still wondering about the Zipper subject, it is the scar a heart patient gets that runs from just below the neck to near the belly button. My new zipper is just about healed but will be a gentle reminder every time I look in the mirror.

Best wishes for a continued successful recovery... and to camping for the next "58" years! ... and yes, thank you for the reminder that as we age we have to pay a lot more attention and listen to our bodies.

Hey Kohldad, excellent call on your body's part in telling you that something's wrong. Even better call on your part for listening. Those little stainless steel culverts in there are fantastic until they start filling back up again. Best wishes for a quick recovery....Jim

Wake UP! That's what I heard after reading your amazing story. This kind of interchange is helping to extend our lives. Modern medicine, and passing on experiences a are a big factor toward our longevity.

Thanks Kohldad, we send our best wishes for you to get back to foolin around.

My wife, Linda was discharged from hospital yesterday. A large kidney stone had her in great pain. 911 got her quickly to relief.

Love to all,

Glad you are back to being normal and appreciate the heads up to the rest of us, too. Now I understand the pic your sister posted a few days back. Take care and hope to have our paths crossing, one day.

My brother in law wasn't feeling too good after a stressful day at work. He went home and took an aspirin and went to bed. A few hours later he called himself an ambulance and off he went to the hospital where he was told the "widowmaker" artery was completely blocked. He nearly died. Would you like to know where he works? He's a nurse in the cardiac care unit at a hospital in Las Vegas. Ha! What a dope!

Glad you're on the road to recovery kohldad. We don't need to be losing anymore fellow campers.

Hey DB, glad to see you back on the forum ๐Ÿ™‚ At least I found out I can still make it from TN to SC in less than 10 hours. But I don't want to do that too often. If one stent is good for 14.5 years then 4 bypasses ought to be good for 58 years :B Look forward to TCing with you this fall. And fall can't come too soon for me. Highs this weekend are going to be in the upper 90s ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I'm hoping this is summer's way of ending on a high note.

So glad you are doing okay and all went well with surgery and recovery. I can understand what you went through.
Had my fishing partner,ER Doc, tell me my reflux was not reflux and get to my doc ASAP. I did and I had a new "zipper" installed before ever having a heart attack.Very lucky.
You take care and may all be good from now on.
