Is it just where I am that diesel and gas cost the same?

Our F150 broke down and since at higher mileage we decided to buy a new truck. Settled and bought a 2008 Ram 3500 diesel so decided to read this forum for hints etc. what I found were many post touting gas prices were lower than diesel. Yes this truck is more than we need now but we can now upgrade trailers. Anyhow where we are I passed four stations on the way home tonight and diesel is the same, pennies less or pennies more than gas. Is it just the NW? Saw this in OR too.

State fuel taxes are part of the equation. In California the tax on diesel is 5 cents higher than for gas. Should actually be a lot more than that to cover the damage done by the big rigs on the highways.

I expect to pay the same or more for diesel as I would pay for premium gas at the pumps. I get 20% more miles on a gallon of diesel fuel with my truck so there is a partial offset in fuel dollars cost for a trip.

Diesel trucks are more expensive to buy and more expensive to maintain and a great deal more expensive to repair. If you are towing 13,000 lbs. then it becomes a need to have but otherwise it is a nice to have and expect to pay the same price either way to own one.

Not any different with gas vehicles. My Mercedes gets 24 MPG and needs premium gas while the Prius burns regular gas and gets 45 MPG. Guess which one gets driven the most during the year.

Keep in mind that there is more tax on diesel. You buy a more efficient engine and the gooberment charges a penalty.

We travel to the PNW a lot, and have always noticed that gas and diesel are about the same out there. Here in Utah, gas has been quite a bit cheaper than diesel for a long time, ranging from $.30 to $.80 or so (compared to 'regular' grade gas). I don't know where diesel is at right now, since I don't have one anymore, but I filled up for $3.73 this morning for our "high altitude" mid-grade 87.

Where I'm at, Regular is 3.35 gal and Diesel is 3.70 a gal. It's closer than it typically is though. Houston, Tx.

I've owned a diesel car for 2.5 years. Its price has been $3.75-4.15 during that time. Gas has been $2.92-$4.30. Summers gasoline goes up, winter down. Diesel always the same around $4. That's been happening for 6 years.

They are very close to the same here right now at some stations. In the town where I work diesel is anywhere from $3.59 to $4.25. Guess where I buy mine ?

Gas and diesel are approx the same price here in West Michigan. Some weeks the gas is a few cents more and then it's the other way around. We filled the diesel truck this afternoon at Miejer (pronounced Mar'ar or some call it Meyer, a dutch name)) and the premium diesel (all they sell) was $3.52 and then my wife went there and filled our SUV and paid $3.46 for gas at the same Meijer station a couple miles from our home roughly 20 minutes later.

Diesel got as low as $3.31 this summer so far and gas got down to $3.27. Diesel price changes slowly as in a week or more for a price change of a few cents but the gas goes up and down every day or two and it can be 30 or more cents change going up and then it comes back down over the next about a week to 10 days.

Walmart Super Center, across the street from Meijer (an upscale Walmart big box store Midwest chain of over 200 stores) is always about a penny less than Meijer for both gas and diesel but it's not the premium diesel at Walmart. Here in West Michigan, Walmart fuel is Murphy fuel and Miejer is Marathon fuel. The premimum gives us slightly better MPG and is much finer filtered and has injector cleaners added in and that's why I prefer it.

In the Midwest, Meijer diesel is called the top or number 1 grade level of No 2 Diesel and the 5 pumps are always busy but the Walmart 2 diesel pumps aren't so it must be that extra penny at Meijer doesn't influence many diesel owners.

according to the EIA, the west coast is the only region where diesel tends to be cheaper than gasoline most of the time. The midwest is a toss-up as well in regards to diesel vs gasoline. The rest of the country, diesel > gasoline.

Don't forget just because diesel is more than gas doesn't mean that much. Figure out cents per mile to get true cost of mile traveled.

I get little over 20 mpg in 01 Dodge 5.9 Many people get 22 or more but I never have, and I figure out mpg long hand not lie-o-meter in console.

Your sig line doesn't say where in Washington you are , but go to gas buddy.com and you can see where a little planning comes in handy. In our state the green handle is diesel, but not every state. After messing up one time, I now read and double check to make sure I'm getting diesel.

Just put 35 gals of Kroger (grocery store) diesel in my truck at $2.64/gallon! That was 23 miles north of Detroit.
Price was actually $3.64 but I had enough Kroger points to get $1/gal discount.
Only 35 gals you say - yup, that is the max for their discount.
BTW gas was $3.52 at the same station but I saw it at $3.49 just down the road.

Really? I thought if you didn't use the pump to pay it was a full fill up. Learned something new.
