On my home from work today and came up along side this guy with a gigantic hook sticking out of the hitch. WTH! Is this even legal? It looks like a hazard to me for sure.

That hook for someone who constantly gets stuck and needs to be extracted. You wouldn't use that to extract someone else.

While I was in the service long ago as well as current construction trailer use a pintle hitch with an open hook would not be secure and certainly wouldn't be DOT compliant. The pintle hook has a top piece that secures down with a pin after it goes hrough the ring on the trailer hitch. While they do sell hooks like that to go in a receiver hitch they are for recovery or show in this case not trailer towing use.

In Ill. it's legal, if it was over 4' it has to have a flag, but you could get a ticket for taking the picture with your phone while driving, LOL

A nod to Dutchmen, I've seen a lot of those around here on logging equipment trailers and the trucks that service them.

That one looks a lot bigger than the typical hook. I'm with downtheroad, it's a "compensator hook"

Those hitches are used for transporting construction trailers. The tongue on the trailer are a round donught . The hook catches the hole of the donught. We had those type of hitches in the Army on almost everything.

Certainly is just for show. Looking at the paint, it has never been hooked to anything.
Probably just as legal as those idiot bull ba!!s that I see hanging off the hitch of some trucks.
