Keep our diesel or get a gas truck?

We have a 2012 Ram 2500 diesel. We pull our 5er approximately 5 times per year, 50 mile round trip each time. Otherwise it's just a daily driver. Dh takes it to work which is a 15 mile trip one way. We try and take it on a longer drive at least once a month.

Since we don't do much towing with it, and don't plan to take any long trips with our camper in the near future, we were tossing around the idea of trading it in for a gas truck. Is there any advantage doing that, or are we better off keeping our diesel? We're leaning toward keeping the diesel because we assume it will last longer than a gas truck, and we assume resale value is better.

Seeing as left brain is for logic and analysis as opposed to the right brain which is for imagination and day dreaming; I guess you could say - anyone in their left mind would choose a gasser. 😉

Do you need the extra payload that a gas powered pickup will provide? Is winter starting a problem with the diesel? Does driving a diesel bump your ego? Your 2012 will never be worth more as trading material than it is now. You will never accumulate the high mileage that really benefits a diesel with your current usage, Have fun with whatever choices you make.

Keep the diesel. You might lose your shirt if you trade in. I am all about diesels so I am pretty one sided when it comes to trucks.

Unless you are having problems with the emission system due to the low usage, there is no reason to replace your diesel. If you were to make this purchase over again, you could have chosen the less expensive gasoline engine since you tow very little.

I wouldn't make that trade at this point, but I tend to keep vehicles a long time unless I have a good reason to change.

If you were starting from scratch and buying I would say go either way. But since you already own the diesel keep it and dont take the hit on depreciation. Plus towing with a gasser after having a diesel...........;)

If the truck isn't giving you problems, why get rid of it? Unless you just want the gasser but it is a step down. The only reason I got rid of my 6.7 for a Hemi is because it was a shop queen and I had enough.

Lack of use is not good as many will say...However I lived only 3 miles from work and my 2001 Ram 2500 diesel only has 73,000 miles on it and it works fine today.

When it wasn't getting much use I ran a biocide in the fuel to kill any fungus growth and I changed oil once a year. The air filter surprised me though. The paper element fell apart so I started changing it every year also. Beyond that I just followed maint schedule and no problems.

At this point there is no real savings in trading it in. It seems to be getting the job done so just keep it.

Is the diesel paid for? If you bought it new, you'll take a depreciation hit on it that would pay for the difference between gas and diesel for a long time to come. As a British water engineer I knew in Somalia used to say (with his best John Wayne impersonation), "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Unless you just want a new truck your going to take a beating at trade in and end up with less of a truck.
