Mice block for power cord door?

We were getting mice in the TT, they were entering through the slot in the power cord door. The TT stays plugged in at our seasonal spot. I put some steel wool in to close up the small gap that exists in the slot when the cord is running through it. This took care of the mice problem but the steel wool of course rusts and discolors the white plastic door. I’m wondering if there is another material that will fill that slot and repel the mice?

Long term I will remove the permanently attached OEM cord and put in one of those outlets in the side of the TT and use a detachable cord as this would be much more convenient for our set-up, but until then I need to keep the mice from coming through that slot.

Bonus question. When I went to remove the plastic cover over the propane tanks at the end of last season there was a mouse standing on one of the tanks frozen in fear that I had just exposed his little world. On the other tank was a nest. What can I put on top of the tanks to repel the mice from building a nest here?

Thanks

The best product is bronze wool. You can find it at the hardware store.

X2 I also use this in the weep holes around the foundation in my S&B home.

You could stuff the area with Camphor (the active ingredient in moth balls). I hear that repels rodents. If that doesn't do it, you may have to use a ball bearing mouse trap.

I use Fresh Cab when we leave our trailer in the woods for several months in the summer. Have not had any mice problems. Of course, we always vacumme well and make sure there is nothing left in the cupboards that the mice might be attracted to.

The Fresh Cab has, to me, a pleasent flowery smell and looks like it is made of dried flowers or herbs. I have left our trailer up there for about 5 weeks without being used and the Fresh Cab smell had mostly disappeared when we returned. No traces of any mice droppings.

I would, if possible, replace it monthly. You get four bags in a box and used three bags at once in our 30ft trailer.

Don't know about using them under the propane cover. We have the hard plastic cover and have never had any problem with anything getting under there. I suspect that the smell of the Fresh Cab would dissipate quite rapidly there and the effeciveness would disappear.

I ordered some fresh cab off amazon and it will be here in a couple of days.

For those of you who use fresh cab, do you only use it only when the rv will be vacant or do you leave it in there while using the rv as well? I ask because some of the reviews mentioned the strong odor, some thought it pleasant, some not so much.

Also it says it's only effective for 30 days. Do you change them out every 30 days or does it seem to last longer?

Finally, would this be a good product to put on top of the propane bottles (under the hard plastic cover) to dissuade mice from building a nest up there?

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the AP 008-644 standard 'hatch door bug shield' from a sort-of-local rv parts store and it will be here in the morning. This is the same one that Barney has on his rig.

008-645 is shaped the same as 008-644 but is a blank. 008-646 is the round one.

I didn't find any at amazon or ebay but a google search turned up a half dozen places that carry it (doesn't mean they actually have any in stock of course).

I have been using the AP Products Bug Shield, that was linked earlier, for the past 5 months while we were in Florida and it works great. Nothing got in through our power cord. 🙂 They also make a round one if the hole in your door is round rather than flat bottomed like ours is.

Barney the opening shown in your picture is too small for some of the varmints I have seen down here, and there's way more of them than those cute little field mice............:B

I use a piece of vinyl siding cut in a 4 inch circle, then cut a hole the size of the power cord in the center then make a single cut from the outside to the inner hole, the disc can then be slipped over the power cord and placed on the inside of the door over the outlet, because it will be a tight fit on the cord it can't be pushed in and the weight of the cord keeps it against the door. Also keeps mosquitoes out too.

If it is only temporary, how about aluminum foil?

One of the first mods I did on my trailer was remove that and install a Marinco Park Power inlet.
