NATCOA?

What the heck is that? I got my latest e-mail issue of Truck Camper Magazine and there was an article in there about NATCOA and how the member is free now.

Never knew it cost anything because I'm not and never have been a member (like I'm not a Good Sam Member either). Never have been one to pay for or want a membership in anything, Amy and I are loners.

Guess if you like campground camping and people next door, it's all good but we bought a TC to camp remote not in a campground. In fact, the only time we do stay in any campground is on a planned long distance trip and then it's one night.

So anyway, what is NATCOA?

To answer your question; although this might get removed.

Monkey44 created the โ€œBatonโ€ from an old wooden baluster post. It currently resides in Monkey44โ€™s office, and a few years ago, permanently retired to Florida.

The Baton was born on Cape Cod, and its initial member meeting took place at Plimoth Rock, Mass. It then traveled to NH and Maine, then met up with Jerry and Paula Gale (A founding member) for the initial โ€œPass the Batonโ€ event in Calais at the Canadian border, then on across the country, handed off again to Bill and Sandy Moody in Vermont. Then it passed (like a TC pony express mail) to various TC campers and joined many members for dinner over a campfire across the nation.

The webmaster for the group was kicked off RV.net and banned for too many policy violations and recruiting here โ€“ so he built the Na โ€ฆ. Website and cultivated camping members to join it. Together, several of us promoted it as an NPO, but unfortunately, it eventually went commercial as it is now.

The Baton always traveled d in a TC, and criss-crossed the country, hit California, then Mexico and Canada, eventually turned back across the USA again, and to Cape Cod, and eventually retired to Florida.

Monkey44 (Cape Cod) and Jerry Gale (Canada) originally brought forth the idea of an international TC camping group, and became founding members along with Jerry Galeng (Budster, Calif) Several others collaborated with the group and we developed a non-profit organization (State of Washington) under the premise that we promote โ€œLeave No Traceโ€ camping and international friendship between TC owners, who often camp remotely. The members have always been fun, exchanging good camping spots, etc. โ€ฆ but the BOD changed politically and began charging fees and advertising, and eventually turned almost completely commercial on the โ€œOwnerโ€ end, and not an NPO supporting wilderness protection and cleanliness as was the initiation premise.

Its membership has always been a great bunch of campers. Monkey44 met and camped with many members over the years. Eventually, the leaders of the group became too political and too commercial, and the initial camping ideas and meeting new folks fell by the wayside, and it exposed itself as a commercial site instead, as you can see on the website today.

Many members continue the original concepts, but behind the scenes changed significantly and Monkey44 resigned due to the commercial activity changes. The BOD became much too tumultuous when commercialism took over and eventually some broke off and pursued other interests. It may have changed again over the years, but Monkey44 has had no contact with the administrative group for years, although some of our original member friendships remain even today.

Bedlam - if you get near us, Mount Airy, NC, please let us know.

We'll keep in touch as our plans firm. Most likely we will enter NC through VA and exit via TN, so it's just a matter of timing to get business done with a little bit of pleasure sprinkled in.

Natcoa was a truck camper club and a 501c (or 503b, i'm not sure which) organization. It organized caravans and rallies. Rallies often included folks from Torklift along with other manufacturers and their display products.
A rally would include a covered area, usually a building, in which sumptive feasts created from potluck dinners.

Rallies are social and educational in nature - with opportunity to see other rigs, their modifications, talk with their owners and exchange ideas.

Needless to say, a great deal of humor arose from the meetings.
It takes a lot of work and volunteers - truck camper owners doing the brunt of the work. A now aging population is probably responsible for the diminished number of volunteers - plus the advent of online social groups.
Natcoa 2.0 is now on Facebook.

CG here or you can stay here. We sold our TC last year, so at the present time we do not have an RV of any type. Take you and Trish to dinner.

I met some really fantastic people there. It was never political.... just good good people and fun to be with.
I melted away from the events when my mother got elderly and I started traveling to visit her twice a year. We started family gatherings in the eastern Sierras that she loves only an hour or so from her place.

Too bad NATCOA imploded. It was a good second forum. Met plenty of nice other truck camper enthusiasts. Went on several rallies and perhaps there may be more. Beddows and his rescue dog from Mexico. Would have been interesting to go on one of his caravans.

We've purchased 3 truck campers from D&H RV and had great experiences. Might be nice to see Dave and Jeremy again ๐Ÿ™‚

Liked them so well, I made a video on our channel when we were there :B

We went to the Glacier Rally about 6-7 years back and it was wonderful...Met a bunch of great TC folks (developed a valued long term relationship too!) and the gathering was devoid of any politics, just a fine gathering of great folks enjoying others company, pot-luck, camper tour and tips, and travel experiences... No regrets whatsoever, just good memories...JMHO

I was a member starting in 06, I was able to glean a lot of good information from them. I paid my dies and thought it was a good deal but then all of the rallies were a good distance. The first one I was eligible for was in 06 at the lake Ogallala it was 110 degrees with no a/c that was not gonna work for me. As time went on on of the mods just pissed me off over and over for stupid stuff he would post. I just walked a way. It was about that time I also hooked up with LOA. That was before the trailers came on the scene. Now they seem to dominate the site, which is okay.

There have been at least two rallies in MT and one in CO. Most rallies happen closer to the person that wants to step up and organize it. It is a logistical nightmare trying to set one up far from home where you might have never been before (hence the reason you want a rally there). NATCOA has not had many volunteers to set one up farther away. This past year, the rally was in eastern OR, very close to Northwood Mfg's factory.

I have attended a truck camper rally in MN hosted by Doug in the midwest and they now have two or three scheduled events per year with a good following.

The east coast also a good group of people that seem to mostly be from the northeast (excluding people like Gus and Stu) . I have met a few of them out west or in the midwest, but have not had chance to make it all the way due to a full time working schedule. We will be making a cross country trip in April this coming year to NC and are hoping to make the gathering in Apex sponsored by D&H RV.

I am a charter member of NATCOA, member no. 13, joined in 2005. I will miss it.
only problem was that it is a west coast club, with most of the actives on the west coast. we were at the 2006 or 2005 rally in Lake Ogallala, NE. cannot remember which year. I believe it was the first national rally NATCOA had. the last one we were at was the one in Colorado Springs, CO, MT. in 2016. I will miss it. Had met many TC friends there. The rally in Glacier NP was my favorite one.
I guess they are going to Facebook.

Saying hi to Bedlam hope all is well with you and Trish (did I get her name right?)
Not sure about the rally years. Bedlam will know.

They did have annual dues, it was $15 or $20, I believe.
