We will be going FT by Sept 2015. We are presently looking at trucks to purchase first. Trying to see if anyone can tell me if this truck could pretty much tow a 5er? RAM 2013 LARAMIE LONGHORN 3500

Just posted in another thread, but well worth repeating in this one.

PULLING a fifth wheel IS NOT YOUR CRITICAL FACTOR.

CARRYING all the weight of the fifth wheel pin weight, the weight of the hitch itself in the vehicle, plus the weight of all passengers and gear IS the most important factor to consider.

Find out a figure on the weight to be carried, then match a truck to that figure and you will do just fine.

Well a year to plan is good, should have been better at two years, that way you would have had a couple seasons to get the bus worked out.
Do some research, yes that Ram 3500 will do the job, but we could do better with more information.

What transmission, is it the 68RFE, Aisin, or G56, yes Ram still offers a six speed manual. Is it Long bed (8') short bed (6.5'), Standard cab, Crew Cab, or Mega cab.
Looks to be used, how many miles??
Have you driven a diesel before? Do some research on that also, the experience will be a lot better if you understand the differences between driving a diesel and a gas engine.

A 13 Cummins DRW will tow up to 29k lbs with the Aisin trans and 4:10 gearing.
The 68RFE with 3:42 is rated around 18k lbs I believe.
With a 14k lb GVW you will have 4-5k payload.

We have pulled small travel trailers before. The 5er is going to be something new for us. The truck I mentioned is a 5.7L Hemi Engine. 4X4 dually. Concerned it may not pull says it's rated 17K tow capacity (dealer says LOL)

A SRW 3500 should be good for any fiver up to about 13000 GVWR. A dually will be good for way more.
