When I was new to the ways of the world I worked in an auto wrecking yard that sold 'rerefined' oil that was pumped out of a drum. If the customer wanted 30W that was what he got. Wanted 5W50 same thing same drum. When I naively asked what if the customer saw what we were doing a shrug and 'ain't happened yet'.:B

Jiffy Lube still does this. Many cars now require 5W20, however its still is not a standard bulk oil product at most locations. But pouring bottles takes more time. Ever hear Ford overhead cam with 10W-40 in it? It sounds like a diesel. One of my customers came in nearly crying because she thought her motor was going out. Nope. Turns out she just got Jiffy Lubed.

Pablum! Most places do have 5W-20 in bulk. (Heck, Hondas have used it for almost 15 years now.) Actually, they frequently don't have anything thicker than 5W-30...I don't remember the last time I saw 10W-40 in bulk. Heck, some places don't even have 10W-30 anymore!

Having said that...I saw a 5.4 E350 delivery van that got nothing but 15W-40 Delo its entire life. It was wrecked with close to 300,000 miles on it!

LOL, this whole post reminds me of a story.

Years ago a good friend and his dad were working for a top fuel team. They used a well known oil along with most other teams.

A big oil sponsor came along and wanted to give their team big bucks to run their oil. Only problem is their oil sucked. At least that was the consensus among my friend and the other teams.

What to do??? What to do??? What did they do?

It's the American way, that's what they did.

They took the sponsorship and took the companies oil. What the crowd didn't know was they would dump the crappy oil out in their trailer away from prying eyes and refill the sponsors bottles with their good oil.

My buddy used to laugh when someone in the crowd would say, "see I told you that was good oil; it has to be if a top fuel team runs it in their engines."

Everybody was happy and no one was the wiser. :B

I always buy national brand oil (Quaker State) when it's on sale at a very large outlet....in my case Canadian Tire.

I would never buy an off brand at a small store. Who knows how long it has been there, who processed this off brand and generally I bet the price is a lot higher than it would be of a national quality brand , on sale, at a big retailer.

I buy my oil by the small case lots, keep it the garage and generally use it within 6 months to a year.

I also carry a liter (quart) in the bottle, in my vehicles, during trips. If I have to add any, I got it there, the brand I use, at the price I don't mind paying.

When you go in for an oil change, you usually get the oil on tap... and
have no idea what they just put in. This is probaly 80 percent of all
oil changes. Just asying...
