Oil & trans temps in 6.7 PSD

What are others seeing in oil & transmission temps when towing ? Went out for 1st long trip w/ out '15 PSD and oil temp was running between 210-225 and trans 200 to 210. This was at hiway speed (70 on NYS T-way). When I did the oil change a 1,000 miles ago, switched to Shell Rotella T-6 Synthetic.

Side note. As stated above, this was our 1st long trip that had a good hill on T-way. Cruise set at 70 and she never dropped nor did the rpm's go above 1750! Thought my old 6.0 was pretty good though she downshifted on same hill. With this new motor, Ive officially joined the "Can't get the smile off my face" crowd!!!

PS: Not towing, both temps run 200-205. Have a bug screen in front of grill. Water temp doesn't budge.

I agree, the dealer talked me out of it on the first oil change I had done.
The rest will all be synthetic.

I wander about the temp too.My 11 in the hills of Kansas at 103 temp outside the engine temp went to 245 and the tran to 205.Looks that is the right operational temp.Next time I will go with synthetic oil may be the temp will don't go that high.

IIRC doesn't the manual call for 5w40 synthetic if we are towing? Or am I crazy?

Yes for Towing or Severe Service the recommended oil is a 5W40, but I'm willing to bet that even a 10W30 diesel engine oil will provide the same protection. Having said that I run a 5W40 oil.

In addition the transmission oil is a synthetic oil that doesn't require service until 150k miles.

These engines are design to run hotter in order to create enough heat to burn off the soot particulates in the DPF (passive regen)creating less need for a active regen that burns more fuel.

I full time and pull a 14,000 pound fiver. I've seen 240 or so oil temp when pulling in the Rockies with my 2013 6.7. That's why I run 100% synthetic oil. Been doing that since new.

I've never seen either the trans or the radiator coolant get too hot. At least not to the point where I start getting concerned.

Normal oil and trans temp is around 190-200 empty and around 205-210 for the oil and maybe a little cooler for the trans when towing.

I usually cruise at 58 mph on the flats.

X2 on the temps, I did see my oil temp go as high as 235 pulling my 40', but that was in hilly terrain and hot outside temps (104).

I agree on the temps. Bought my first 6.7 2011, now have a 2014 DRW, and both just keep the same temp. I've pulled in some very hot weather in the Texas Panhandle, and go to Colorado for the summer. It pulls the grades just great. Can't believe how well these trucks will pull.

Agreed!

Out west a couple years back towing up major grades, all temps well within specs. And it pulls so dang easy. It is so easy to accelerate up a hill from 55 to 65 with 15k on the back, that it is astonishing, especially when many many moons ago I pulled 8k with my 5.0 F150 and it just was a struggle to move (I mean a long time ago, 1988).

This engine is just so much fun. 🙂

My transmission runs about 196 to 205 with outside air temp was around 95 degrees towing 11,400lbs 5er in rolling hills. Engine temp runs about 210 to 215.

Yep, went from a 2500hd diesel to F350 diesel and the 2500HD locked out 6th and F350 stays in 6th 95% of the time. I also officially joined the "Can't get the smile off my face" crowd.
