Opinions of Double Bed over Double Bed bunk houses

My boys are rapidly approaching the teenage years and we are looking to upgrade to a bunk house model. Most of the quad bunk houses have relatively small bunks, especially for a near adult size person.

I have found some Double Bed's over Double Bed bunks and they look like they would be super comfy for my two boys.

Does anyone here have one of these and if so how are they working out for you? Also, general opinions on these models.

Here is an example of the floor plan we are looking at.

I'm starting to look into TT and really like the idea of a double over double or even quad bunk house. We do foster care and my wife is pregnant with our first of two kids. I am starting to really like the following bunk house floor plan... so much so that this is what I will probably end up with one of these for my family.

Its well in a half ton trucks rating... its more than capable of sleeping a lot of people.

Thanks!

Thank you all! We have a local Zinger dealer and I am falling in love with the Zinger ZT28BH. Here is a link to the floor plan.

ZT28BH

What I really like about this is the private bedroom and the super-slide with the Dinette and the couch.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

Our floorplan is almost identical, except the kitchen and the dinette are flipped, with the dinette being on front side where the awning is, making for a nice view while eating.

Wow - I've never heard of anything above 300 lbs. And although mine is rated at 300 lbs, I wouldn't want to sleep below someone that weighed that much. :E

Years ago I had to strengthen the frame of my lower bunk because a friend who was 300+ lbs came with me when we camped in the infield of a NASCAR race. I could just picture him crashing through the bunk on to the water heater and tank in the middle of the night.

I like the idea of the private bedroom as on the ZT28BH, but one disadvantage is if you install a real queen bed, you will likely not be able to walk around the foot of the bed to get to the far side.

My trailer has a similar bedroom set up, but with a walk thru where the "ward" closet is on the ZT28BH. For me, a big deal as I wanted to install a real queen bed (and I'm not even that tall...I just like the extra room more than the extra closet). Just something to keep in mind if you want to install a bigger mattress...

Another thought: with two kids, we find a u-shape dinette to be far superior to the standard dinette.

that would be pretty much identical to our Jay Flight 28BHBE....with 2 exceptions being a "U" shaped dinette and a large stand up shower.....good luck and enjoy!

Lover the floor plan, we upgraded to a 14 viewfinder 28bhss this spring. great for the kids and plenty of storage. the door directly to the bathroom from outside is nice to keep from everyone tracking through camper. My kids are 7 and 5 and they will grow into this just fine.

I had a 28' trailer with a 1/2 wide bunk on top over a double bunk on the bottom. My kids hated it mainly because they didn't like the opening along the side of the top bunk. I put up a rail, but that made it more difficult to get in /out. It was also apparent that the upper bunk would be small as they got older. It was tight enough that I wouldn't want to sleep in it.

When we shopped for a new trailer, one requirement was double over double and the kids love it. They both have enough room to spread out their stuff so the bunks are now almost like individual bedrooms from their perspective.

One other note: check the headroom on the upper bunk...a lot of them are very tight. The lower bunk gets lots of headroom but the upper bunk is usually quite a bit tighter....that was another problem with our previous trailer (...and it seems is always a problem with the triple bunk layouts).

I was sold on this floor plan as well - double-ove-double corner bunks and opposite corner bathroom with it's own exterior door. Fortunately, there are many manufacturers making this floorplan with some minor variations on the overall layout.
Mine ('13 Viewfinder 28BHSS) has the AC duct for the top bunk. As I recall, each bunk also has it's own receptacle (plug-in) but the bunks do not have the little nook like I saw in one other floorplan (Bullet Premier 32BHPR?).
Like many others, our reasons for going with this floorplan were 1) our kids (12 and 14) pretty much outgrew the little narrow bunks (aka "coffins") and 2)these doubles allow for my niece and/or nephew to accompany us inside the trailer if they want without having to deploy the dinette/sofa beds. 3) The bunkhouse models (31 and 32 foot models) were just a bit more trailer than we wanted.

One drawback to the layout is that it's just new enough that finding it in a used model was difficult. A couple used ones came and went in my general area but were new enough that the owners wanted too much for them. I ended up buyinh new for less than I could have probably talked them down to. That situation will start to change in the next year or two when more of these hit the market used.

Good luck. We can all share stories about our satisfaction with this layout as we get some time camping in them.

When we take children, each child has a bunk plus an extra bunk for clothes and treasures. We have had 200 pound, six feet tall children in the bunks and they have not complained to us, just mentioned how nice it is not to have to share a bed with their brother camping. Talk it over with them. See what they would want.
The best part for us is that when it is raining and they want to watch TV, we do not have to watch the same thing.

Double over Double here and love it......the growing kids was the reason for this choice along with the huge bathroom with it's own door...
