Our Best Camping Experience - With New Added Photos

Recently Jane and I traveled to the Overland Expo in Flagstaff from our home in Illinois. We trundled along in our cozy 1967 Avion. After the Expo we decided to look around in Southern Utah. I had traveled through there many years ago - and had a firm memory of Capitol Reef National Monument. We wrote up this trip on the 67Avion thread for our fellow Avionistas.

But, I am still in awe of what we saw and experienced. One day, for no real reason, we drove off of the road just before entering the Moki Dugway in Southern Utah. I wanted to get way off road..and Jane wanted to settle for the evening. Some rain had been predicted.

We-Did-Not-Have-A-Clue-Of-What-Was-At-The-End-Of-The-Road...

It was the most stunning view I have ever seen. Spread in front of us was the hand of Creation. We both sat and stared at the distance where Monument Valley rose and the storms swept the horizon.

The place is called Muley Point. And it turns out that it is relatively well known. But, for us...on that day....it was a revelation.

Here is Jane gazing at the buttes and erosion and river below:

We saw an afternoon storm sweeping across the Valley:

And here is the dawn of the following day with Monument Valley in the distance:

After coming down from Muley Point we encountered another desert storm just after Mexican Hat:

You can get a glimpse of our mood:

My solution to the issue of foreground hovels and delapidated vehicles in Monument Valley - cover them up:

Great pictures, we recently went through Monument Valley, I was disappointed, all the views had run down hovels, complete with junk cars in the foreground

That picture of the leap is incredible. It really sums up the experience.

All of the trips we've made out west have been our favorites. One we made in 2011 was especially memorable when we visited Colorado Nat'l Monument, Dead Horse Point, Capitol Reef, Arches Nat'l park, Bryce Canyon, and Zion.

Your pictures reminded me of some I took at Arches on that trip. We walked out to Delicate Arch early in the day before the crowds got too big. The weather was perfect for the hike: clear, sunny but cool enough for a jacket.

That's my Jane in the foreground admiring the view.

I maneuvered around behind her to get a long shot that in it's original size you can see our camper parked way off in the distance.

I took another a few minutes later, and didn't realize until I was looking at them on my laptop later that I had captured a young girl in the middle of a joyful leap under the arch. My attention was focused so much on the distance that I missed what was going on under my nose. Fortunately the camera caught it.

I keep asking the boss "So where are we going on vacation this year?" and she just answers "West!"

For those of you who travel to Muley Point bear in mind that the road can be difficult. The main road in appears to be well maintained. However, I managed to break a Torklift tie down and shed a Fastgun after my bellybar scraped rock on the outcrop.

If you have good clearance it's no problem. If you don't .......

I sure do! BTW that is a terrific sunset photo with the truck campers, and so is the over view of the trucks. PM me about them.

Beautiful images D, not surprised after talking cameras and photography with you Friday night at the OX. I have photographed up there a couple times but never camped overnight, something I need to do. Sounds like you two had a great trip after Flagstaff. I have a photo posted on my flickr site of 4 bearded young men that you might recognize, www.flickr.com/photos/gpnusa. It was nice talking to you at the OX, hopefully we will run into you in the future.

Nice photos it is a great view. Our best camper experience was our trip to Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. We were gone for five months. Traveled the

Thanx neighbor. I actually used to work for magazines including National Geographic. It's good to use my skills on this Forum. On the other hand, this isn't an assignment. It's me and Jane encountering the awesome landscape.

I may put up more of the images tomorrow.
