Ram air suspension

I have not seen any owner comments on the air suspension systems offered on the Ram trucks. If you have one would you care to share your experience and whether they are worth the money?

They are very UNpopular here in Canada. They fail regularly in really cold weather. Salesman wouldn't sell me one when I was shopping for a 2500, and I have a friend who got the Limited pkg in a 1500 that came with 4 corner air suspension. Of course the system failed just after the warranty expired, and they wanted $5000 or thereabouts to repair it. He chose to upgrade instead and now has a 2500 6.4L Hemi.

I have had some busy periods where I could very well have missed your posts but I do appreciate you posting again. I was also hoping to hear from some people with lighter trucks.

Are you talking about the 1500's system? There are three different systems on the Rams. the 1500 / 2500 / 3500 all offer air but they are all different. The 1500 is on all four corners and does a number of things.

The rear air ride on the 3500's is simply AWESOME!

I carry FULL RAWR of 9,750# when RV is attached. The top of bed is at 55" the same height as when it's unloaded in ALT trailer ride height.

There are two full length and two axle to front leaf springs. They are small in comparison to the regular sprung trucks and are there to hold axle in place and control axle wrap on launch. I have 40K on the truck with ZERO issues. I have NEVER heard of a single issue with this system. I have a 2016 Mega Cab SRW 3500 with the factory air assist. I really like it and I won't go back to the standard system. All I can wish for is that they improve on it as far as options. On the 3500 it is a hybrid system. The suspension is still basically the same as the standard system it just has air springs added to bring the loaded truck back to original ride height. It also takes away the bounce when loaded heavily. I only wish they had it set up like the 2500 which is full air (no steel springs) on the rear and then give a manual mode and auto mode. I have a 2005 2500 that I put full air under the rear and it's the cat's meow to be able to dump the air completely when loading and unloading out of the truck. I can literally put the tailgate at the height the bumper is normally at which is around 30" off the ground when normally 40".

I might suggest you go to a Ram forum and inquire there, you are likely to get more relevant information. From what I have read, people LOVE them. You get the much smoother ride when empty and an automatically firmer ride as you add weight. I'm curious to see how it works long term, personally.

I'm sure Fishie will come along and tell you his thoughts on the matter though...

My thoughts are its an overpriced option, that you have no control over the air pressure. IMO you can accomplish the same thing, and more with aftermarket air at half the price. If you want it to be automatic ,then you can still go to aftermarket with automatic leveling. There is nothing magic or better with factory air, just more money. Plus you subject to all the electronics it has with factory air. IMO aftermarket is a much simpler setup.

Its pretty simple, factory air ,you have no control, after market you control whatever air you want ,and how level etc.

As always its your money spend it how you want, if you don't want to mess with installing aftermarket, add the factory option.
