Unless you follow the owners manual!

Oil every 6months/15k miles.

Both Fuel filters every 15k miles.

You have 2 filters and change them both if at 15kmi on orig filters.
Warning, dealer will charge you about $200 for the filters and probably an hour at least to change them.
Even on a discount the filters cost about $100 for the pair.

Sorry to hear about the other stufff......

This is not quite accurate. As the owner of a Dodge Ram 2500 CummimsTD I have had several discussions with dealers about this fuel filter issue. And these dealers are all across the country.

They ALL agree: The only filter that needs to be replaced at 15k is the one under the hood which is the element type. They tell me this came in a service bulletin from RAM/FCA And it is NOT $100 at O Rielly. The WIX is $66.99 (which dont get me wrong is expensive but it;s a far cry from $100) The other filter is about $86 and some change. these prices are in Tucson.

The other filter located above your drive shaft can be changed at 30K+ miles.

The dash readout pertains to the Fuel Filter under the hood on the engine.

NOT saying your info is false, BUT.......

It's VERY clear as to when filter changes are REQUIRED as in BOTH. Read below.

Also I would HIGHLY advise using the MOPAR/RAYCOR/FLEETGUARD filters. If Chrysler deems the filters you use NOT acceptable they WILL deny warranty. Use other filters ar your own risk. As I posted earlier the two OE filters are sold as a pair on AMAZON for $70 plus $7 shipping.

True the 28mm is the "correct" size 6 point socket. BUT I mentioned the 1 1/8" socket since more people may already have that size. 1 1/8" is equal to 28.5750mm so the 1 1/8" socket is .575 mm too large. THAT will not make a bit of difference. So use what is cheaper or what you have.

I have used my 1 1/8" 6 point shallow impact socket at least 6 times between my 11 and 15 RAM.

Some opinions may vary, but changing that front filter, IMO you want to give yourself every chance you can to succeed. Many have ruined that plastic cap either using the wrong socket, wrong angle ,whatever.

I too have the 6 point 1*1/8 socket, but still went with a 28mm on the second change, like the fit much better. For 6-8 dollars not a big deal. If one can afford the truck, why skimp, use the right tool.

Pro-tip - a filler tube from a jug of DEF works very well to extend the drain tube on the front filter down so you can empty straight into a jug rather than spilling it over your axle. I'll try the coffee can idea next time for that rear filter. Maybe get a little less diesel in my mouth...

bbaker, good luck with your treatment. You are 2000 miles from having to change your filter and 1200 miles from home. I'm sure there is a little wiggle room in there. I changed my filters at 15,700 miles recently. The front filter is still very clean at 700 over. I'm sure you could probably replace the front filter every 30K miles... but its cheap and relatively easy to replace so its not worth the risk. Bottom line, you'll be fine to drive home and change... even if you are slightly over the 15K mile mark.

Again, best of luck, hope you get the treatment you need and a full recovery.

The filter socket is a must and well worth the price.

DO you have a link for the amazon listing? The set I've bought off Amazon was $95. My local dealer wants $85/each for the filters.!!! :E

Strap wrench will work on the filter it's self. Be sure to drain first. The engine mounted filter is not biggie either. 1 1/8" 6 point 1/2" drive socket with wobbly then about 12" of extension and 1/2" ratchet will bust the cap loose.

You can also use a 28mm 6 point socket as well - which will fit better as it's metric to begin with. As for the rear - in frame filter, I use a 4 liter/1 gallon ice cream bucket setting on top of rear drive shaft and resting against fuel tank, open drain valve, remove electrical plug and then loosen filter and let it drain into the pail. As for driving another 1200 miles, unless you have some real poor quality diesel fuel to begin with, you'll be more then good to wait till you get home.

Sorry about tour situation.

The filter at the tank is easy. The one on the engine is a pain in the but. Tight and awkward space.

Wait till you get home, dont try and do it on the road. A few miles isnt gonna hurt

They're about $80 for the pair on Amazon. Changing the rear one sucks. I've done it twice and came away covered in diesel to some degree both times. The top one is easier but you need a large socket and some extensions and a flex connector to get the cap off. There are lots of how-to's on Youtube.
