Ram Goes to Stunning 900 lb-ft of torque

Perrysburg_Dodg

The 2016 Ram 3500 breaks the towing record previously held by the old Ram 3500 (at 30,000 pounds) by moving up to 31,210 pounds, more than two tons beyond its closest rival. To get there, Ram went from 12 to 16 hardened bolts on the rear axle ring gear (for all trucks with the 11.8-inch axle), and used stronger materials in the differential case.

As far as any more specs nothing yet. It will only be available with the Aisin 6 speed in the 3500. As for the 4500 and 5500 I do not know.

Don,
It's clear this increase only applied to the Asisin tranny, but I'm surprised that the cummins has received two torque bumps now without a increase in HP.

My sources say no on the next Powerstroke being 1,000 lb-ft in the 2017.

Also, just because you increase torque at 1,700 rpm does not mean it will effect peak horsepower at 2,800 rpm. The 900 lb-ft of torque will increase the horsepower at 1,700 rpm to 291hp, but that is still not greater than the peak 385hp at 2,800 rpm.

Like what was said before, this whole "who gots the most power and tows the most" pissing contest is just about worthless to just about everyone here. If any of these diesels were not capable to tow what most owners need to while maintaining decent speeds and with power to spare then I can see the point. However, all three diesels can easily tow what most truck owners here need them to so bragging about power that you will never need or use in the real world is about as pointless as a shnit flavored lollipop. How about keeping the remaining power and capabilities while increasing fuel mileage. Do that and I will really be impressed.

I guess I'm excluded out of the "everyone" category here, because I really enjoy the extra HP and Torque my 6.7 PSD delivers over my 6.0 PSD towing or unloaded. And that's towing the same camper, boat, utility trailer/tractor-shredder it's just hands down a more enjoyable experience. And dusting an occasional truck just tops it off! :B

I'm looking forward to next years PSD that reaches the 1000 ft/lbs mark, and increase HP.

I said just about everyone. There are still some here that need a little more growing up to do.

That's why I was specific to "Just about Everyone"

I'm probably older than you think I am... I suppose my first car a Chevelle LS5 left an ever lasting impression on me! :W

I have seen a 55 year old man who still had some growing up to do. It is not about age and is more about a person's mentality.

However, if one has to purposely go out of their way to piss in someones sandbox by saying "mine is better than yours" just so he can get some kind of enjoyment to make himself feel better then I think that person has some growing up to do. If someone has to "dust" someone on public roads(instead of a track where it is safer) just so he can get his rocks off then I think that person has some growing up to do. Lastly, if some is still caught up in "my brand is better" then they definitely have some growing up to do regardless of age.

Just for fun take a look under a 2012 RAM 3500 then look at a 2015 RAM 3500. Amazing difference!

They are making the trucks and engines more capable and backing up their claims with SAE J2807.

MOST if not ALL three 3500 duallies are more powerful, and have the same suspension as 20 yr ago class 4 trucks had. Reality is, the 35's are class 4's, not true class 3's.

The J2087 tow specs, depending upon the how you tow, and where, are no better specs than days gone by. It only gives one a 12% max grade to have to pull up in reverse or first gear. Well below the 15-20% grades contractors have to pull locally on side roads. Or possibly that side road you have to get to to get home. So you may stall out on the side of the road, with lots of HP/Torque, and no way to use it to get up the hill to fetch a pail of water! I've seen that with 18wheelers locally. Kind of funny actually!

At some point in time, yes, the HP/Torque wars will go too far per say.

I agree steve. The new spec is gcwr at a minimum of 35 or 40 mph on a 5% grade! Yeah i 100F temps, with AC on. but none the less, slower than the minimum speed limit here in washington state, which is 45! so while it may meet the SAE towing spec, it does not meet the legal spec of some of the local hwys! I doubt a judge will buy the,"it meets jxxxx spec" so I must be legal!

A min in first gear 12%, pretty shallow grade actually. When here in seattle I have been up and down a few 24% grades. At max gcwr NONE of the newest and greates deezals would make that spec! So one will be sitting at the bottom of said hill blowing up there almighty 6 spd auto trans, as I have done with other previous supposidly bullet proof auto transmissions........

At the end of the day, if the seats fit your butdinsky, you like the color, shape, has the power etc you need. Buy the blinken truck! Opions are like rear ends, we all have them, at some point in time, they all let out a stinky one.....except my wife of course......

Marty
Fully loaded log trucks do not do 45 on a 5% grade so why worry what an RV will do. I past a few this past year while in Oregon and Idaho on 2 lane roads with passing lanes.

Yeah don't get me started on the 05 cummins I purchased. That one didn't last long either and sunk some $$$ into it as well. Also had to swallow some family pride on that one too!

I haven't seen size restrictions, but the break over angles on some of these roads will even stop a short low slung vehicle. That is reason Subaru's are popular in Seattle even if the owner does not frequent the mountains - They have a taller stance.

Marty

Do they allow vehicles longer than 25ft on those 24% grades?

No sign at bottom or top that says a vehicle of a given size is not allowed on them grades. Had a client with 33% grade driveway off of lake washington. We had a 3 axel dump trucks "BACK" down, do a 90* turn, dump a 1/2 truck length back, then drive up the driveway. If the brakes failed, truck would go thru the garage, kitchen and 30' later end up in Lk Washington. There is a blocl f Queen Anne ave on the north side of Queen Anne hill that is 24%. Built a block wall on the side of it. My sister has an 18% grade in the front of her house east of Lake Washington. Lots of roads around here with 15+% grade signs on them, no length or weight limits for the most part. A few do, but less than 5% of them have restrictions.
