Today, in Denver, I saw something I haven't seen for a long time: gasoline more expensive than diesel fuel. Regular gasoline was $3.789 and diesel was $3.669. Has anyone seen this anywhere else?

FreeLanceing,

Just fueled up our truck less than an hour ago at Meijers and diesel is exactly 50 cents/gal less than 87 UL gasoline. Same across the street at WalMart.

Diesel has dropped $0.10 here in the last week.
Hope this trend keeps up!

Now if we could just get America to approve small-block diesels like Europe, which historically has more stringent environmental laws than us, we'd be all set.

I'd take a diesel or hybrid Wrangler...

Figures, I just picked up a gas powered truck.

The idea that diesel is not as refined is incorrect. Diesel is a differnet component from the refining process. Historically demand was lower relative to the amount produced so it tended to be cheaper than gas. More recently, demand for diesel has gone up especially in europe so they are shipping it out and the price has gone up. In addition, the low sulfur rules made it more expensive to refine starting a few years back.

I drove around a fair chunk of AZ a week ago. I saw unleaded regular as low as 3.07 and diesel as low as 3.53. But in certain communities, it was only separated by a few cents; though higher than the lows listed above.

When I was young, diesel was $.25 per gallon and gasoline was $.35 per gallon. Since diesel is a crude fuel, it amazes me that for the last 20 years or so, diesel has cost more than gasoline. It sounds like the public is getting ripped off again.
Maybe where you are its been that way for that long , but everywhere i've been its only been less than 10 years of this, 8 or 9 at most. It still costs less than gas to produce, cost, supply and demand have nothing to do with cost at the pump anymore, its driven by speculators.

More like 5 or 6 years...about 1 year after we bought a diesel!

Recenty diesel is less expensive than gasoline in our area also, I hope the trend continues.
I am not sure it is diesel getting less expensive or gas getting more expensive?!

Oh well...you don't play this game to save money!

In California the fuel tax is 5 cents higher for diesel than for gasoline. But with only two predatory refinery companys, Valero and Tesoro, in the state the price for diesel is normally higher than the price for premium gas. Like Enron the Texas oil companies love to come to California to loot and pillage.

Gasoline also requires low sulfur oil stocks which is why the US government will do anything to keep the Saudi Arabia government happy. Their "sweet" crude is cheaper to refine as it starts out with a much lower sulfur content.

Cost has little to do with the price of diesel or gasoline. A third of the amount we pay at the pumps goes to the guys trading futures at Goldman Sachs and Chase and the other speculators - and that is from the mouth of the chairman of Goldman Sachs. And has anyone noticed the record profits of the oil companies year after year after year?

When I was first starting to drive there were multiple independent refineries in California and they would be selling regular gas at $0.22 per gallon while the majors (Chevron, Shell, Union 76) were selling at $0.32 per gallon or 50% more than the independents. Now the independents are gone and we have a duopoly.
