If I'm a SD resident and purchase. A new vehicle in NC, which state's sales tax do I pay? I believe it's SD. What say you? Thanks in advance.

We are full timers with SD as our domicile state. That said, if you're a SD resident the DMV has nothing to do with your situation. All vehicle transactions are handled through the Tax assessor's office.

We purchased our toad in Alabama last year from a dealer. Paid cash for the car, paid zero dollars to Alabama. Dealer gave us a temp plate and we took care of getting it registered in SD. Kept the same plates off our old car and put them on the new one. Everything was done on line except for the amount due. That was done with a phone call to the tax office. They will need either a bill of sale or the dealer's contract agreement. Copies are ok. All this is on line on SD website or you can contact your county's tax assessor.

If you're not a full timer and/or a SD resident, then none of the above applies...Dennis

If you have Americas Mailbox as your mail forwarder, call them with the purchase info and they will do it for you...D

HERE is the form you need to fill out. Print it and take it with you to the dealer where you're purchasing the vehicle.
We can do more than we think we can, but most do less than we think we do

In some states(Arizona being one), there is no sales tax on private party sales. Also if you trade in at a dealer you only pay sales tax on the difference.

My Domicile is SouthDakota. Bought truck in Seattle and paid 3% to SD and licensed it there. Bought RV in OK and paid 4% and licensed it there.

This lady can answer all your questions and help with everything associated with SD .

Here in Ga, my son bought a car in Tennessee. He told them the car would be registered in Ga. They charged him GA state tax, gave him the paperwork, and the state sent Ga the money. He just showed a receipt at the tag place and got his tags.

This is your best advice. Ask here for opinions if you want, but on legal and financial matters go to the source.

X3!!
I would check with both states!

Maybe both....like the Washington example given.

Either way, you will HAVE to present the sales documents when you register it in your home state.....to prove whether or not you paid any tax in the state where you bought it.

Bought 2 vehicles in SC from 2 different dealers about 3 years ago. Procedure I used was to:

Before you do anything, Make arrangements with your mail service to handle the title/transfer with the SD DMV. You will have to give the mail service a very limited power of attorney to handle the transaction. They can also tell you how much you will owe SD within a couple of dollars.

Tell the SC dealership up front that you are registering the vehicle in SD and will not be paying any registration fees to SC.

Send all required paperwork to the mail service along with appropriate amount of money and then wait for the plates to come.

SC should give you a 30 day temp plate. Pay attention to the expiration date, one dealership was very slow (lazy) with completing their end of the paperwork, so they had to give us the 2nd temp plate at their cost.

Good luck, safe travels

Some states have reciprocal agreements with other states. In June I purchased a new Vegas in Michigan while on a trip. Paid the Michigan sales tax. Upon returning to Washington state we paid the difference between WA and MI.

So a call to both states' DMV might be prudent. Or do as I did and go online to see what you need.

SD has no sales tax on vehicles you register there. They do however have an excise tax that was just raised from 3% to 4%. You will have to pay this to SD. Do not pay any sales tax to the state you purchase it in. I bought my 2014 Ram dually in Washington state last year and the dealer had NO idea! He tried to collect sales tax so I started walking out. He instead collected ONLY the temporary tag fee and I took care of the 3% excise tax with SD myself.

check with NC, some states do hit you with sale tax regardless of where it will be registered. Your dealer in NC will know.

you would register it in SD and it is on the difference of any trade in.
