I believe it was a 223 in line in my 60 F 100 panel truck. So under powered we called it the lead sled. Had a Dart and a van with the 225 slant six, not to bad in the dart, a dog in the van. My favorite in lines were the two 300's in my Econolines. One was in a 75 E100 that was a work and tow truck until 2002. It would turn over three times and start no matter what. The body eventually started falling apart but you couldn't kill the engine. The V6's in my last Econoline and F 150 just couldn't handle work like the 300's could.

I'd love to see a reworked 300 to todays standards with Eco-boost and a good tranny. Just imagine the torque it would put out for towing.

You made me remember my 240Z ! Fun car to drive.

My 240Z was a early car. A 1971. I sold it to a friend who still has it. It was to be a car for his son when he was of driving age, but his son had no interest in it. It's being kept for his grandson now, hopefully he will like it ! The inline sixes are cool, and in a car with that design....long hood short tail, the engine is a great match.
Silky smooth. I'm glad to see them still around and "coming back".

Although I will admit I love my 60 degree VQ series V6 Nissan. Nice packaging, stiff block, stout crank, high revving, smooth running.

Hasn't been a US Falcon since 1970. Thinking of the Mustang possibly?

Yes I know that but the Australian Falcon diverged from the U.S. Falcon in 1968 it became much heavier and larger in its LTD version as long as a Ford US Police Cruiser

My Ford stright six has a Borg-Warner T18 four on the floor transmission with a granny first. What a great transmission for a great engine.

I stuck a T-18 behind my 4.3L I-6 in a jeep. Also had 2.72:1 transfer case. I could stick it in low/low and walk beside it at idle.

Great combo and could see it behind a 300 i-6 being awesome.

X2

X3. Had several farm pickups with the old 300CI straight six Ford.

I have a 67 F100 (1 year older than me!) with a straight six that I use for dump trips and hauling compost/bark. It has spun the odometer at least a couple of times. All I can say is I wish I was holding up as well as that straight six is holding up!

I honestly don't know if my straight six is a 300 or 240 but it is plenty lively even with its micro-sized single barrel carb. I have rebuilt the single barrel carb a half dozen times and often thought about putting an edelbrock 4 barrel intake on it with a small 4 barrel carb... seems a little extravagant for a garbage hauler though.

By far the best thing about my old 67 is it will fit 5 people without having to put anyone in the bed... 3 in the cab and 2 on either side of the engine in the engine compartment. I speced it out and I can fit a couple seats in the engine compartment no problem. When I rarely do have to fiddle with the engine (only carb problems really) there are only 200 or so parts in the whole drive train so it is pretty easy to diagnose.

My Ford stright six has a Borg-Warner T18 four on the floor transmission with a granny first. What a great transmission for a great engine. I believe Ford later put a Mitsubishi (or something) car 5 speed transmission behind the straight six and it was not up the the job of handling the straight six torque.

As much as I love my straight six I love my daily driver's engine even more and it is a V6! The VQ engine in my Nissan Maxima is a marvel of engineering! It is a great example of how great a V6 can be when a manufacture builds a V6 from scratch and continually refines it instead of just lopping a couple cylinders off a V8.

P.S. Even though I tow with a Duramax I still have the ut most respect for the Cummins 5.9 straight sixes. It is everything I love about my Ford straight six as far as power, torque, and reliability but a Diesel to boot!

An inline six actually has better balance than a V8.

We have the straight six in our 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has very close to 200,000 miles on it and just runs down the highway like it always did. When we bought it, a friend who owns a fleet maintenance business told us we couldn't go wrong with that engine. He was right.

It isn't the efficient gas mileage vehicle that some now have, but it still gets an average of about 20 mpg. That works for doing my running around town.

GM had an excellent if short lived inline engine series, that included a six, five and four cylinder. It was modern...dohc.

I would think it would be a tough job fitting an in line 6 crossways on a front wheel drive vehicle.

Dad had a 19' Reinel with a GM 250 I-6. It would idle down low enough we did not need a kicker motor for Salmon fishing. If I remember correctly it would go 40-43mph. Would love to have that same boat today.
