Tire Choices

I realize I am going to get a variety of responses, but I have to replace a tire on my 2007 Cherokee by Forest River 18-DD. These are my choices:

Super Trail
Goodyear Marathon
Carlisle Radial Trail
Triangle Radial
Akuret

Which is my best bet?

It is a 205/75R15 and I need to get something local.

Thanks,
Jay Bosworth

Why do you have to find them locally? Tire Rack sent my new tires within 2 days to a local GoodYear shop. They did the install. Good price, good service, I'll use them next time around.

Mine were 14 inch and the best tire out there in 14 inch was the Kumho 857 radial.

When I bought tires for my Toyota Van, the best deal on Michelin radials was to order them online from Walmart and have them shipped to the local store for install. Again they showed up right away and the install service was quick and painless. Tire for tire the local stores don't compete on price.

I also wanted to give the local dealer a chance at my trailer tire business so after I priced the Kumhos on the Tire Rack website, I called three local tire stores and none of them could even get them, forget having them in stock. After three tries I just gave up and ordered them online.

It's my opinion that the local tire stores are all geared to an outmoded business model where the Regional Distributor 'pushes' merchandise down the chain until it sits on a store rack for maybe months until the next promotion gets rid of them. About the only thing the local store can order is various sizes of the tires that the distributor wants to push. Besides that, try getting tire specs out of the kid behind the counter.

The for example Kumhos don't specify the aspect ratio, they just size them as 205/14. The guy in one store couldn't even look them up in his computer without knowing the aspect ratio ...:R

I have no connection with Tire Rack except as a customer but their website will tell you everything you need to know about tires.;)

Lowsuv, passenger tires are not trailer tires. Maxxis makes great tires for off road vehicles, ATVs, etc. Their reputation by RV owners is also very high.

maxxis passenger car tires were recently tested among 77 other tires in the consumer reports november 2012 issue .
the maxxis tires were rated in the lowest 25 % of the tires tested .
because you are only replacing one tire and the others are 205/75r15 you may want to stay close to that size.
tire rack offers a load range D tire made by power king towmax .
that D tire is rated for 2150 pounds load at 65 psi in a 205 /75 R 15 D .
a normal ST 205/75R15 load range C tire is rated for 1820 pounds including the maxxis tire .
the rolling diameter of both of these is 27.1 " .
the D rated 2271 # cap tire costs $ 92 plus shipping .
the C rated 1820 # cap tire cost $ 87 plus the same shipping

here is a link for the specs :
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Power+King&tireModel=Towmax+STR&sidewall=Blackwall&partnum=075R5TMSTRV2&tab=Specs

shipping is about $ 14-15 per tire or so.
yesterday i ordered a new set of tires from tire rack for my wife's E350 4Matic sedan .
tire rack is shipping them to a local tire shop here and they are mounting them for $ 105 on her fancy wheels .
i am taking advantage of a $ 100 rebate from tire rack for buying 4 new tires .
the particular highly rated tires i wanted were not available from local sources .
she is getting the top rated performance all-season tires V speed rating shown on page 61 in CR .
the low rated maxxis tires are rated on page 60 of that issue .

After a Maxxis tread separation after only four years and less than 10K miles of use, I switched to the new Carlisle Radial Sport Trail. Only have a couple of thousand miles on the Carlisle, but they seem like a decent tire so far.

The new Carslile radial trail is an excellent tire. I've had great luck with it. It is NOT like the old design. Much much better. Get metal valve stems too!

If you are only replacing one, it probably does not matter much. Personally, I would take the Goodyear or Carlisle as those are the only two I ever heard of.

What happened to the old tire? Road hazard or deterioration?

I would buy one to get me trough the next trip or two, but then start planning on replacing all four with Maaxis with the next higher load range, keeping the newest tire for a spare.

My new Forest River 34 foot Flagstaff (7400 lbs dry) came with some unknown brand load range C supposedly made by Cooper. I changed them out to M008 Maxxis Eis

Maxxis all the way! Put them on last year before our trip from NC to Yellowstone. Added them to my boat trailer this year.

Maxxis 8008. Your local Discount Tire store should be able to get them quickly. I bought some a month ago at a Discount tire store, 215/75R14. 2 days to store. And they were cheaper than Amazon, or any other mail order store. Stop by the store. Discount Tire Direct lists the Maxxis, but the Discount Tire local web sites do not. A store rep will help you.
