Got 70,000 miles on the current ATF oil, so today it and the spin-on filter got changed. I also dropped the pan to see if there was any sludge and it was clean. Love this Duramax/Allison combo.

I'm the starter of the thread. What are you saying about me? I don't know better? I take serious offense at your words.

By having to change the transmission fluid every 30k miles you're essentially doing a fluid exchange.

Sure glad I don't have to worry about having to perform that job every 30k miles IMHO.

The 30K is simple drain and fill, about 7 qt. Aisin states Mobil 3309 which a case of 6 is about $30, MOPAR labeled is like $60 a gallon.

60K a little more involved, drop pan and change filter, also send sample to Blackstone for lab work.

I never heard of a transmission oil analysis but I would simply stick to the manufacturers maintenance interval or a little shorter and you should be good. And like a said changing the transmission fluid every 30k miles I wouldn't worry about a flush.

Are ya'll remembering to clean the pan magnet, for those dropping the pan ?
They can really pile up with shavings.

Then again, haven't serviced a newer transmission so magnet may not exist.

I At 30k I drained 8 qts and filled with the Mobil. At 60k dropped pan replaced filter and 9 qts AMZ/OIL.

I will do the 90k a bit early before heading South this Fall at 85k or so with AMZ/OIL Signature series ATF.

The "YET" part is what scares me. If the filter says tighten a certain amount after contact I do so. Honestly if a filter can be removed by hand after 5-15,000 miles that is loose IMHO.

Ron, tighten by hand the 3/4 turn past gasket contact, it is tight. I didnโ€™t say it spun off easily at change. I wear a playtex rubber kitchen glove for heat resistance and better grip. I have been doing this way since an oil and filter change on Dadโ€™s 59 Ford 352. Destroyed the spin on filter getting it off had gone on with clean oil on the gasket, and likely a full turn after gasket contact, that was about 1967,!
The 2001 ran 10k between changes.

Some filters say 3/4 and some 1-1/4 past. Diesels seem to have more vibration.

Fleetguard states 3/4 never had a problem, my 2001, DD 2004 3500 DRW, or the 2016 3500 DRW. As stated it take grip and some twist to get off, but donโ€™t need to fiddle with a filter wrench or strap wrench.

Sounds like you are a candidate for a HeavyWeight B&W being a ManlyMan.

Since mfg removed the plug on the torque converter, it's hard to remove ALL of the fluid. But if you do changes at the recomended interval, fluid should have plenty of life left in it and no contamination, so draining what you can and refilling should do fine.

I still have ONE vehicle with a drain plug on the torque converter. But that car transmission was introduced in 1990 and by 2000 the mfg had eliminated the torque converter drain plug.
