Truck Camper Rental

I had a great time this weekend renting a truck camper from Cruise America. The F-150 handled the Lance 650 like a dream. A little tight for 3 adults on the first day, but great overall.

I haven't look at the new ALUMINUM F-150's just yet. However, if Ford did shave several hundred pounds off their F-150's and left the axle ratings unchanged, it's possible the new half tons could reasonably carry a small camper.

This is great news. It has been frustrating that up until now you could not rent a TC. This has left us forced to rent a class B or C in the US until now.

I understand the limitations though - not renting the TC separately, choosing a RWD only truck. Plus they've gone with the basic 5.4 engine many of their other Ford rental vehicles use.

They don't rent the TC without the truck. If you look closely at the pictures, there aren't any jacks on the camper.

In our neck of the woods, the only dealer I know of that rents TC's is ALP/Adventurer/Eagle Cap out of Cooksville ON. They have beefed up F350's to go along with their rental TC's.

I don't believe they separate the two units i.e. only rent the TC. In addition to not having the proper tie down set-up, there would simply be too much room for something to go wrong with the truck piece (inadequate suspension, unrelated damage blamed on the TC etc.) leading to ugly anger and potential lawsuits.

Small doesn't mean light. Lance says it weighs 1842lbs "wet" whatever that means. There's definitely more than 1842lbs back there with any supplies, utensils, and equipment they brought along.

I know what nearly a ton looks like in the bed of an F150. That truck is sitting way too high in the rear to have a ton in the bed. Heck it's sitting way too high for 1000lbs.

Putting 10-ply tires on half ton trucks since aught-four.

It would be interesting to get up close and inspect one to see how they doctored up the truck to carry the load.

The camper is 1842lbs wet, plus whatever you bring along, plus you, plus your passengers... You could easily be pushing 2500-3000lbs.

I looked, it had air bags for sure. The other 2 drove in a separate vehicle (they left early). Having said that, they could have easily joined me. the truck is plenty capable and even gets better gas mileage (with the camper) than my Ford Expedition...

I saw a few of those at Burning Man this year, but never got around to checking them out.
They did look very short!
