Very Strange.....or is it?

Hi All,

I purchased a new 2013 EC 950 in July....washing it this morning I noticed when I pushed up on the front fiberglass cap, under the bed (over the cab) there was about 1-1.5" of play. What I mean is the fiberglass is not attached to the bottom of the cab-over. This starts about 1 foot in from the front and sides.

Is this de-laminated or a flaw that I need to have corrected before the warranty runs out?

Maybe keeping this conversation going will help provide some leverage with Eagle Cap
Looking at their web site their mission statment is

We`re never satisfied until good is better ... and better - best!

This unit should probably be shipped back to the factory by the dealer for repairs

That front cap repair should be done at the factory in Yakima. Only the factory has the special machine to press and hold the cap in place while the adhesive cures. I watched the old La Grande, OR factory use that machine when my camper was being built there. That is the main problem with Eagle Caps, only the factory can do a proper repair on that cap and we all know leaks do happen.
My 1050 did have a small leak and part of my cap under the cab-over on the driver's side has
separated. I called Eagle Cap soon after the new ownership (brother of the old owner) took over and moved the factory to Yakima. Their answer; "we don't do repairs", well then how is this cap supposed to be repaired? The previous management would go out of their way to make things correct and would pay to get the camper to and from the factory. The new management team leaves a lot to be desired.
Eagle Cap may offer a 3 year structural warranty, but management usually tries to do repairs the cheap way out. Not worth the paper it's written on.
If Eagle Cap won't fix your cap at the factory then I recommend going to La Grande, OR where the general manager of the old Eagle Cap has a repair facility. He knows Eagle Caps and believes in customer service. That is where my cap will be fixed this spring. Don't want some yahoo repair shop fixing this.

Bummer is all I can say... I could not live with that. Fix it right or take it back!

That said, what is going to happen is as you drive that loose section is going to vibrate and shake going down the road. The turbulence of the air flow is going to work it. Even if they glue it, the glue would need to be injected in many holes to keep this from happening.

Eagle Cap folks should replace the unit or pay to get it back to the factory to make it right!

Other EC owners have posted here that their's are not loose. So yours should not be loose!

Be nice to EC folks and I am sure that they will make it right, the right way!

I have not spoken to the dealer. The workmanship of the camper is under warranty for one year. I want the work done at the Yakima, WA plant.

Hi Bill,

This is a sag, very flexible. I can reach under and push this area up that distance. I don't believe you can read moisture that might be behind the fiberglass through the fiberglass without making a hole in it.

I can't say for sure how long this has been there as it is not something you can easily see with the naked eye, only upon washing and drying diid I notice the problem.

A 1" out of flat condition over 96" is not bad. I am trying to understand what the problem is, without pics it is hard to conceive.
Not trying to trivialize this...but 1" out of flat?
I don't know if that is worth worrying about.

I would certainly check it with a non destructive method-moisture analyzer-before I let some RV shop hack into my brad new camper.

It is a 1 pc fiberglass cap...not much that can go wrong there.

Put a straight edge on your camper and let us know what you get...I think you'll be surprised.

If it were me, I'd also fasten it from the bottom with screws w/seals for a couple reasons;
1. A screw is going to instantly reveal if there's water under there once the panel is pierced.
2. The mechanical connection of the screw is going to be many times stronger than glue from the other side as the factory described installing.

With that said, the factory can't be given a free walk on this. I'd say the defect is worth at least 10% of the camper cost. Either in a direct refund, a reduction of the loan amount or credit towards products they carry. I'd tell 'em I will deal with the problem as long as it's not water related and that I want the 10% compensation for the defective camper. I'd also tell 'em I'm returning the camper for a replacement or my money back if they don't agree to my terms.

No way would I let some 'RV Shop' attempt to 'repair' this.

You should contact the factory again and tell them you want it repaired CORRECTLY!
Lean on them a little, like ask "would you live with this or would you fix it right?
Take a lot of pictures, because if a lawyer gets involved, that is what he will ask for from you!
Of course this would be a last resort.

it is strange,I have a 2005 wood framed tc and the underside of my cabover is tight to the framework,wouldnt expect anyting less on a 2013...

I would check the area with a moisture meter first (ND) if that doesn't show anything...I think I would document with pics sent registered letter to OEM and forget about.
The one piece fiberglass cap SHOULD be very robust. If there is no sign of moisture, I would just consider it cosmetic and move on.
