What do I look and listen for when buying a 6.7 F350 Diesel

First...not interested in starting a tow truck war!

So...I am going to look at a 2011 F350 6.7 Crew Cab Diesel, this is one of the very first of the current shape (2012 on).
It is being sold by a main dealer (not Ford), it has done nearly 200,000 klms (160,000 mls).

I am nearly retired and I am fairly mechanically minded, I however have never owned a diesel truck before, I do drive diesel buses for a living, should I look and listen for anything in particular re. a Diesel 6.7 F350?

I read every post about Ricatic's nightmare and went the CP.3 route as in Ram CTD. 2 years latter and still happy.
So did I and boy am I glad I did. Thanks Ricatic

I would say exactly ditto, the same for me. Fact is, I probably would not have bought the truck had I known about this potential problem beforehand.

But I did, then got nervous because of the stories floating around. But, as 4X4ord said, mine has just been an excellent vehicle.

ONE GRIPE THOUGH! I absolutely hate the plastic oil pan and drain plug on this one!

It is a 2011, just as is the one you are looking at. Because of this plastic set up, you cannot get a Fumoto style oil drain valve for it.

Mind you, it is simple to change oil on. But I would prefer to have a Fumoto valve, which of course I have since found one cannot do with this particular year.

So one tidbit to keep in mind regarding the 2011.

To the OP, get the truck checked from an independent mechanic. Get the oasis report.

If you like the truck, get it! Don't let anyone play with your mind.
Ford trucks are solid. Some are jealous and try to convince themselves the Ram and GM are better. I think Ram makes a decent truck, as for GM I can't believe people are still buying them. My 02 cents.

To the OP.

Get the VIN number and go to a Ford dealer and get an OASIS report. That's the record of everything that has been done to the truck warranty wise at the dealer, and also any services that were done at the dealer that happen to be in the system.

That's not a new truck, which was obviously run fairly hard. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is best to check these things out.

Ram trucks are also fairly common and cheaper to find at that mileage, as they are commonly used by hot shot transporters.

It may pay to take a look at those also. Find a good independent diesel mechanic and take whatever you are planning on buying to be looked over. Best warranty for out of warranty vehicle you can get.

Rick,
If I felt like my truck was on borrowed time I would trade in my truck in a New York minute. But contrary to what you want others to think, I will continue to report how my current truck performs and if any problems develop, but I got to say my '12 is my best truck to date. :W

200,000 km is about 124,000 miles. I would sooner have a newer truck with high mileage than an older model with low mileage for the same money. Running a truck down the highway all day causes very little wear if its not pulling heavy. 4 years ago we bought a 3 year old Peterbilt with nearly 1,300,000 km on it. We've run it for 4 years now and haven't spent a dime on repairs....it runs, drives and looks like new. We find our old equipment is much more likely to give trouble regardless of miles.

If the guy was working it as a Hot Shot that's only 40,000 miles a year. If my big trucks (semi's) aren't running 150,000 miles per year we're being lazy. They are made to run !!! Keep the fluids and filters changed regularly and go !!! For a daily driver ..... Work, Wal Mart and a lot of stop and go yea, that's a lot of miles.
