What truck to buy next for towing Travel Trailer

Hi Everyone,

We are in the processing of looking for another truck to tow our 35' Travel trailer. Our truck (2007 Ford F250 Diesel)is on it's last leg at 145,000 miles and it hasn't been such a great truck maintenance wise.
We are now looking at the Chevy, Dodge and GMC. We have seen more Rams towing compared to the others. What do you tow your Travel Trailers with and should we stick with the diesel? Should we also get the 4X4 and what engine size should we look for. We have had the EGR valve replaced 3 times on this truck and it's time to move on. We decided no more Ford Trucks. Thanks!

Long in the tooth from an asthetics standpoint? Maybe, but some designs stand the test of time longer than others. The original Super duty went for what? Like 18 years before a ground up new design?

I just hope they don't screw up the looks of the 5th gen HD's !!!

I think it's still SEXY, especially with those WIDE hips!!!

Your way of thinking on the Ram is grossly outdated.

Yes, I agree. The 4th generation has been around for the last 5 years (and will continue for the next 2) and has been highly reliable. I'm active on several RAM truck forums that have more than a few members well over 200K miles on their gasser from this gen with just normal maintenance. One member has 228k miles on his 16 2500 gasser as he tows flat beds across the country on a daily basis. He reports not a single failure except for a couple of FCA recalls. This platform is wonderful and I would buy it again in a heartbeat

Either Ford or GM would serve you well. But if a couple thousand separates you from settling or getting what you want, I'd bite the bullet and get what you want. Odds are you'll be happier in the long run.

As far as the cost of the Ford goes I think his way of thinking is a little off as well. I paid 3k more for a fully loaded Platinum than what a Laramie Limited would have cost me. In my opinion that put the two trucks at a pretty even level as far as value is concerned.

As a previous post pointed out, you do not need a diesel powered truck if you are towing under 10K lbs. If you tow heavier, a gasser will do it but will also be fatiguing for the driver. I don't look for a cost saving in diesel and bought one due to the amount of weight I need to move over elevation. I was heavily weighing whether I wanted to spend the money on another diesel or accept reduced performance for that reduced price. I put about 10K dedicated miles of RV'ing on my truck every year and rarely use it unloaded, so that also played into my decision. There are many factors you will have to consider but keep your options open and think about your typical usage.

I also had a Ford 6.0 PSD, but my ownership did not end on a sour note. After ten years of reliable service, I needed a bigger truck and decided to replace it. Mine sold for slightly less than dealer retail and way more than trade in value through a private sale. I had it on the market for about three months and turned away the people sending me low ball offers - The first person that actually came to view the truck and drive it brought the cash the next day. I was ready to buy another Ford, but Ram brought more value for my dollar on similarly equipped vehicles and got my business this time. I would have no problem buying from any of the big three as long as they offer what I want for a reasonable price.

I love my 2014 Cummins 3500 MC, 68K miles and not had one problem other then maint. My 07.5 6.7 Cummins the first year from the 5.9 had 200k miles and never an egg problem. Some did have problems with egrโ€™s though. All three have problems from time to time and they all make good trucks now. Drive all three and buy the one you like best.
Ram Megacab with the Cummin/Asian sold me and I canโ€™t be happier.
Good luck shopping.
