Here is an idea.........let's act like adults and respond accordingly. You can tell if someone is not going to hear your opinion. Better off just lettin' it go.

The problem with moving wayward threads to their own section is that the perps can't leave it there. The folks who get into SHOUTING matches generally lack self restraint. I find the block feature useful. I block argumentative posters, those who seek attention with "unique" posting styles and those who feel compelled to comment excessively. JMO....

Is there a possibility to create a hot topic censorship free thread "Thunderdome" of RV.net. When threads go to off the rails (politics, 1/2 ton vs dually pulling, and Ford vs. Ram,) the moderators could warn the offenders once and if it continues, boom the moderators can move the thread to the "Thunderdome section." The two sparing idiots can keep the thread going forever is they want. This will clear up the rest of the threads for us and no censorship.

That was basically the role of "Around The Campfire" way back when. Then the hammer fell, and no controversy, however minor, was allowed any longer. Now "Around The Campfire" is the most locked down forum here, which explains why there are few, if any, new posts there.

One of the best things on this forum is the "Hide" button. You can basically ignore threads, or even whole forums, that you find offensive or uninteresting. I use it extensively. It's much easier to implement here than other forums. I've also discovered at some point during my years of forum attendance that I can ignore a particular post by simply not reading it when I discover I don't care for it.

I think one of the reasons social media like Facebook is so popular is the fact there is little to no censorship, or moderation. People are free to say what they want, and of course the mostly banal content proves this.

One of the forums I moderate has a "Compost Heap" for just that reason. The hope is that the thread will die out there or something useful can be gleamed out of the rest of the noise.

When Iโ€™m replying I try to remember why people are here. In this case we are primarily looking to share information about our RV lives, but I also welcome a few comments that show that we are human. I get frustrated tho when Iโ€™m trying to resolve an RV-related issue and discover that the topic doesnโ€™t remotely match the content. Iโ€™ve enjoyed getting a glimpse of who you are, but politics and personality clashes can really destroy what could be an excellent place for people to share. So my resolve in the future is to try to stay on topic when I post. Please join me in that effort. Thanks for listening and Merry Christmas.

For what it is worth, if any deletions of the whole thread, or portions is me. Sometimes another comes and does things, if I know I am not around for a bit, potentially out of cell range or not.
From what I have noticed tho, is the sub is more inclined to delete etc than I am.
Generally speaking, there is not a lot that shakes me per say. As everyone has an opinion on something, be it good or bad depending upon ones view!
For that matter, when I do close, it has gotten to a name calling situation or equal. Some I let go too long, others I get probably a bit too quick! As most of us are human, we do make mistakes both ways.
Usually it is best if one can have a reasonble discussion, discourse on a topic....at times, it will not happen. So things go away, get locked.......
It also depends upon where I am when I might see something, if I delete a post, vs lock, vs the whole thing. Most of the time I see this on a phone. Doing mod duties on a phone is harder than my laptop.
Some mods would probably have locked the Tesla thread. But even tho it does have some political issues. it has not been completely out of what is ok vs no ok.
At the end of the day tho, no matter who does or does not moderate a forum of any sort.....no one will be completely happy about how it goes!

A very heartfelt THANK YOU for taking the time to comment on this and explain your thinking.

When Threads are summarily closed with no explanation it is incredibly disrespectful to the vast majority of posters that are conducting a civil and thoughtful discussion.

I am one of those for Warning first, getting rid of repeat offenders next and only closing as a last resort.

I do appreciate the challenges you work under and a really well moderated site is a pleasure to participate in. And one thing that helps is consistency in moderating.

Thanks again for your explanation.

How about we suspend people

Probably not the best course of action with an active membership of about two dozen.

Moderating on two boards, we have other ways of keeping known abusers of rules, flamers, antagonistic people etc. Also not imho a way to deal with them.....

Admin of forum wants to always make sure that there is a list of why one is banned before doing so. One does get a leash attached....At the end of the day. It still comes down to a particular moderators level of what power play they want.

Marty, for me, I think you are pretty fair and even-handed in allowing debate even when it sometimes ventures into the absurd. There is at least one moderator on this site who deletes any post that disagrees with his/her position on any subject and sometimes it seems for no reason at all, so we have both extremes depending on the forum. I know at least 4 forum members who left this site due to this particular moderator. I say all of this to say thanks for the thankless work that you do here.
